The SAFER app has recently launched in South Africa – the safety app for women in South Africa, specially geared towards the unique safety needs of women in our country.

What is it that wakes you up at 2am?
I don’t know about you, but for me, I worry about my kids and how responsible they are when it comes to their safety when out & about (okay, my kids are adults with kids of their own, but I still worry!)
Living with the daily reality of crime in South Africa, we’re all aware of security, both at home and when out on the road. And that concern creeps into our downtime, when we should be relaxing, enjoying the outdoors, taking a walk with the dog or going for a ride. There is always that niggling thought though at how vulnerable we all are – “What would I do if something happened?”
For some of us, we’re fortunate to have alarms in our homes and know that when we need it, there will be an armed response ready to come to our aid. But what happens when we leave the relative safety of our property? Can we rely on someone being available to help us wherever we are?
A desire to address these fears led to the creation of SAFER – the emergency response app for all women in South Africa – with the aim of providing everyone with the quickest, easiest access to a professional reaction network, 24/7, wherever they are.
Simply shaking your phone or pressing the on-screen panic button immediately activates a National Network of over 3 600 armed reaction officers and ER24 paramedics. Without even needing to look at your phone, you’ll get a response within SECONDS! And they’ll stay on the line with you until help arrives and confirm that you’re safe. All of your nominated Emergency Contacts are also instantly sent an sms & email to let them know you’re in trouble, when you raise an alert. They receive your exact GPS location, plus any video and audio evidence that the app automatically records, so they can see what is happening in real time.
SAFER ensures that you’ll never be alone – in any emergency situation.

Wow that’s an amazing app Lynne with the amount of GBV in south Africa one needs to be safe and alert all the time
So if there’s an app that caters for our safety this is wonderful
Yes, it really does sound superb and I’ve had such a great discussion surrounding this app with Gordon Knight from SAFER. I will be testing it out myself sometime soon, as soon as I have managed to get through some of the workload in my pipeline! With all the gender based violence in our country this is an essential service for women! I can’t wait to get started on it. The monthly fee is only R79 – such a small cost for safety. And you can also buy a safety button to carry with you instead of using the app!
These app is everything it teaches me everything everyone can enjoy it
It is fantastic Kedibone! I tested it during one of my live videos and they respond so quickly. Thankfully I have not needed to use it but knowing I can get help when I need it makes me feel so much safer!
What an amazing app I would definitely need this for my daughter who’s now making use of apps like ride share. Every extra safety measure is always welcome especially in today’s lifetime
Yes Marcus, it is a fantastic app to keep your girl safe! One day when my kids are more independent I will want both of my kids to have this app.

I won a 3 month subscription for SAFER app, so far luckily I have not had to use it, but I have been looking at all the features and playing around with it. Must say I’m so impressed with them. I would truly recommend it, the people are super helpful and super responsive if you have any questions and daily so far they send you an info email that tells you about a feature, which is great coz to much info at once can be overwhelming. Love the trip feature which is super comforting when you need to go places in SA and this time of year the criminals go absolutely crazy. Highly recommend guys. 👌
I feel exactly the same way Leanne – I have been testing the app and so happy I have not had to use it yet for a real emergency but I feel so much safer knowing I have help on hand for if I need it. Yes they are so helpful and fast. I am so glad to hear you are loving your SAFER app too!

i love this idea and need to look into subscribing for this. nowadays there is so much happening, when i leave the house i just get scared
Unfortunately I’ve just heard that SAFER is closing down! I need to update my post to say its not available anymore. It is a lovely concept though and I loved having it on my phone.
