Glutathione is naturally found in the body as it is produced by the liver. It also is found in many foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and meats. Many individuals take glutathione to keep their immune systems up to par, while others take it for various health conditions. It does help to build up tissues in the body, and can help to make the chemicals and proteins the body needs in order to function properly.
Glutathione is needed to protect many of the organs in the body, such as the brain, kidneys, eyes, liver, heart, and skin.

What is glutathione?
Glutathione is widely talked about in the health care field as many refer to it as the “mother of all antioxidants. It can be taken as a supplement orally or inhaled through the nose. There are also trans dermal patches available. Doctors have also given this intravenously. When taken orally, the dose is 50 mg to 600 mg, while a nasal spray dosage is 600 mg twice per day. If given as an injection, 600 mg
once per day is recommended.
Even though glutathione is found naturally in the body, as we age, we lose it. Every 10 years, it is estimated that we lose between 10 to 15% after we reach the age of 20.
Glutathione levels in the body can be increased when a person exercises. The immune system will be boosted, and the body will be better able to detox itself. Even doing as little as half an hour can help your levels of glutathione increase.
It is important to note that in order to produce adequate supplies of glutathione, one must have enough sleep each night. Those that are sleep deprived will find that their levels are decreased in the body. Repeatedly losing sleep can lead the body to oxidative stress or hormonal imbalances.
What are the benefits of taking glutathione?
Many have found that taking glutathione helps to reduce inflammation in the body. This supplement is also anti-aging. If one does not have enough of this anti-oxidant in their bodies, free radicals will cause the entire body to age. However, when the supply in the body is replenished, the aging process will slow down.
Depression and stress can also be prevented when glutathione is taken. People who have IBS may find some relief when supplementing with this, as using this will renew the gut wall. Those who are suffering from autism can greatly benefit as it can treat the transsulfuration metabolites that are typically low in children who have autism.
One of the biggest benefits of taking glutathione orally is it causing more energy. There may also be a greater focus of the individual. Muscle function and physical strength can also be increased when supplementing with this.
Glutathione has also been taken for detoxifying the body. Toxins and carcinogens can be eliminated from the body as the supplement works on a cellular level. Those that are taking chemotherapy and radiation have used this supplement in order to protect themselves.
What are the risks associated with taking glutathione?
Just like with any supplement taken, there are always risks found. Glutathione does have some side effects that could make asthma worse if you do suffer from this condition. Wheezing could worsen if glutathione is taken. It has also been proven that if this is taken long time, zinc levels in the body could be lowered. The skin may also be more sensitive to the sun when this supplement has been taken orally. Anyone who has a history of skin cancer should consult their doctor before taking this product.
Oral glutathione should also not be taken by anyone with ulcers that are caused by H. Pylori, as the bacteria in the H. Pylori feed on the macrophages. Macrophages can be multiplied when glutathione is taken. Those that take oral glutathione may also find that they have allergies as it contains extra preservatives and ingredients.
Skin whitening may also occur when taking glutathione. In fact, many dermatologists have used this in their practices as it has been proven to be safe and effective for them.
Other minor side effects of oral glutathione include gas and loose stools, flushing of the skin, and weight gain. When inhaled, a possible side effect could be fever, while others may experience chest tightness or diarrhea.
Is glutathione safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Not enough information is available to determine if glutathione is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is recommended to stay away from it during either of these periods. Regardless if you feel glutathione is safe for pregnancy or breastfeeding; it is wise to consult your doctor first.
How to get glutathione naturally from foods
Foods that naturally have glutathione in them include broccoli, kale, watercress, spinach, avocados, garlic, asparagus, and mustard greens. Other vegetables that are a good source of glutathione include cauliflower, onions, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, carrots, and cabbage. Watermelon and oranges are also rich in this supplement.
It is important to consume vitamin C foods as well, such as bell peppers and strawberries. The vitamin C will help maintain the levels of glutathione in the body.
Brazil nuts contain glutathione. Eating just a few of these nuts per week can help get the daily recommended amount. Unprocessed meats, such as beef, fish, chicken, and organ meats are excellent sources of glutathione. You may also find this in cottage cheese and brown rice.
