Addiction Treatment Group Therapy

Here’s How Drug Rehabilitation Centers Work

In the society that we live in, a lot of stigmas are attached to rehabs. Some people frown when they hear someone went to or came back from a rehabilitation center. There is a lot of judgment that gets passed. However, it is nothing but our misfortune to be living amidst this mentality. Drug rehabilitation centers do an incredible job by providing addiction treatment and many more services that addicts require.

So, we need to make it clear on our part that no shame should be associated with going to a drug rehabilitation center. It is a brave step to get rid of your addiction and seek the help you need. We understand that going to rehab can be intimidating. This is why we have explained the working of a drug rehabilitation center.

Step 1 – You will need to check in first

Well, everything starts with an introduction. All good things, at least. This is why you will need to first check in to a good drug rehabilitation center. Your check-in will include not only your admission but also an interview. One or more of the staff members of the drug rehabilitation center will sit down with you and carry out pong conversations.

This meeting will be aimed at deriving as much information about your alcohol or drug problem as possible. It is a necessary step because unless the rehab knows all about your addiction, they can’t start with customized treatment for you. This makes it clear that a good rehab will be more inclined towards healing for you that is more tailored to your problem and concerning habits.

Step 2 – You will be detoxified

The detox process can be the main reason why you are at a drug rehabilitation center. So, we can call this step the most important one. Once your assessment is over, which is done through an intake interview, you will have to undergo the process of detoxification. In this process, the substance that you have been abusing or overusing, like alcohol or drugs, or both, will be drained out of your system.

We are aiming towards a physical cleanse here. It is impossible for you to move on with further treatment unless the toxins are taken out of your body. It goes without saying that detoxification is hard, especially when you have been using the substance for a longer period. Still, you must be patient and understand that it is for your good. It is natural to feel withdrawal symptoms. This is why medications are given in some cases to help you out.

Mental Health Therapy

Step 3 – Your therapy will start

As we said, detoxification is the cleansing of the body, and therapy is the ultimate purification of your mind. Therapy is focused on strengthening your brain and your heart to remain true to a cleaner life. Therapy goes on throughout your treatment at the drug rehabilitation center. It is not a separate step. You will be able to overcome your cravings and avoid relapses if your therapy is successful.

Individual therapy – Individual therapies are sessions with a health professional that are one-on-one. It is aimed at giving yourself a clearer look at your addiction. You will be able to see the effect that your addiction has had on your mind and body. You can look at it like it is a type of personal education. Individual therapy is an inseparable part of your rehab journey because it makes you realize what the real problem is.

Without addressing the problem, no treatment is possible. In more advanced stages of your therapy, you will be identifying the triggers to your addiction. You will also learn how you can deal with them. Behavioral therapies are the most helpful in the case of addictions. Motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy are two more effective types of behavioral therapies.

Family Counseling – When friends and family are present during the educational process, the outcome of the therapy is improved. This is because the people around the addict are also deeply affected. In many cases, these people might have contributed to the addiction itself.

Whichever the reason is, family counseling is a great way to help the addict’s family while also treating the addict. Family counseling, on the whole, is targeted at your family so that they can support you in remaining clean after you have returned from the rehab.

Step 4 – You’ll be provided aftercare planning

The journey to self-healing that you start at a drug rehabilitation center doesn’t end there. It goes on forever. So, when you leave your rehab, your counselor will formulate an aftercare plan with you.

This will include all the medical and social support that you will need as you transition into a better version of yourself. It may include staying in a sober living home, follow-up visits, support groups, medications, and many more.
