Choosing a first birthday present for your child should be loads of fun for you. My personal feeling is gifts that encourage outdoor play are always a terrific choice. Playing in nature is so good for children and there are so many stimulating toys that you can choose from that will aid your child’s development and also keep your child interested for a long time to come, making this a gift that will be well used for a long time to come.
Outdoor play is not just fun, but it is also educational for your child, especially in the early years.
The best gifts you can choose for your child will encourage outdoor play, boost your child’s creativity, help your child’s sensory development, keep your child entertained (and in this way help your child learn to concentrate) and be educational.
While there are many toys that will make your child happy on his or her first birthday, here are some gift ideas that will be highly beneficial for your child and will always stand the test of time:
-
Baby Doll Stroller
If you have a girl she would love a baby doll stroller and if you have a boy you can go for the same idea in a push toy. I take my kids out often for a walk and when my daughter was young she always wanted to bring her favorite doll with in her baby doll stroller and when my son was born I would take him in a stroller and my daughter would take her “baby” in her baby doll stroller.
We live on a dirt road so buying the best baby doll stroller was essential, but I do recommend you buy a high quality one for your daughter since this is sure to become a much used, highly prized toy.
When my son started walking he also loved using my daughter’s doll stroller and would often strap his toys into it and bring it on our walks.
-
Trampoline
What kid doesn’t love a trampoline? A trampoline ticks off all the requirements for me. It encourages outdoor play, it encourages physical activity and it gives pure joy to your child too. Trampolines come with so many great benefits that are hard to ignore.
Obviously ensure you are aware of all the trampoline safety requirements and buy one that is suitable for a young child and you are good to go. I recommend one of those ones circle ones on a stand with a safety net all around to start. When your child gets older you can consider another type.
-
Kids Water Table
Buying a water table is a great gift choice for your child. You can’t deny that water keeps your child fascinated for hours on end. This type of toy is great because it encourages creativity, it helps your child to develop hand eye coordination skills and it helps with sensory and motor development.
The top water tables come with lots of extra features that will ensure that there are lots of activities your child can do.
-
Baby Slide
Your child’s first slide must be small and safe so that he or she can start using it without any help and without any risk of accidents. There are some lovely 3 foot slides that are suitable for a one year old. The great thing about a slide like this is that it is also suitable for inside so if it is cold or raining you can easily bring it inside too to keep your child active and amused.
-
Toddler Motorbike
The fact is that every child needs to have a toddler motorbike. This will become a prized possession and it also comes with great benefits for your child.
A toddler motorbike will keep your child active and encourage outdoor play. Riding a toddler motorbike also helps your child to develop physical strength, balance and motor development skills.
-
Sand Pit
Just like water children are fascinated with sand and it can keep them busy for a very long time. You can buy a sand pit set and you could also buy a high quality water table like mentioned above that comes with a sandpit.
Just remember to ensure that you have a cover for your sand pit to protect it from cats using it as a litter tray when it is not in use.
-
Baby Paddle Pool
As already stated water is great source of amusement for kids. Playing in a small paddle pool will provide endless entertainment for your child. On a hot day it will also be very useful to keep your child cool and content.
There are loads of different options to choose from and while the blow up pools may be much cheaper you need to keep in mind that they are easily damaged. Buying a hardier pool will last long after your child is too big for it.
-
Play Tent
Kids love tents and buying your child a play tent will also provide lots of entertainment. A play tent can be used inside and outside which will help entertain your child when it is cold and rainy too.
Plus when it is hot your child will have some protection from the sun while playing outside.
-
Outdoor Play Set
There are so many awesome outdoor play sets that you can consider that will make a great first birthday gift for your child. You can look at beach play sets which your child can use in the sandpit, gardening play sets and more.
Having an outdoor play set also compliments so many outdoor play activities and they don’t cost a lot. A little bucket and spade with a watering can will provide lots of fun for your child and it is brilliant for your child’s sensory development and learning.
If you enjoy gardening your child can start to learn how to garden along with you, it is never too early to get started gardening with kids.
-
Pull Cart
Children love pulling carts and filling them up with toys. If you get your child an outdoor play set this will go perfectly with it so your child can use the cart to pull his or her toys around the garden. Young children also find packing and unpacking carts very entertaining.
It can also double up as a storage place for your child’s outdoor toys too making it very useful for keeping your garden tidy.
Oh my these are such cool gift ideas this mommy must arrange a first birthday in september and look for gifts well i just found gift ideas thanks alot and for outdoors which perfect.
I love the outdoor play gifts much more than anything else, then next up for me is puzzles and books but then is for a little older children 🙂
I am glad you enjoyed this post @lisaanderson
You must be very excited @lisaanderson! You’ve only got a few months to go and it is going to go so fast.
Have you decided on a present yet? I got both my children toddler motorbikes so if you haven’t got one of those yet you must! And you must see how fast they drive them indoors, round corners and everything. It is so cute!
The play tent looks perfect for my sons it will be their own outdoor or indoor adventure.. 👍
I wouldn’t buy an expensive water table though. Its a waste of money. I just give my kids some buckets of water and old tupperwares and things. They go crazy for it and its at no cost.
We have bought the blow up pools before, and also complete waste of money. The kids trash them so quick. After we bought that hard plastic shell pool and that worked great, also could fill it with sand and make a sandpit.
Otherwise great gift ideas for the first birthday.
Those are very interesting ideas and those gifts keeps the kids active very nice
Wow this is very interesting, I am also one of the mommies who have no idea what to buy for my baby girl on her first birthday which is in August, but I really loved all ideas I’ve seen, I think I’ll go with the baby stroller is very nice n safe.
Thanks Lynne for Sharing.
Okay, my first point is going to make me sound so far left I’m almost right again but I must point out that a stroller is not only an okay gift for a baby boy but, possibly, a great one. Boys should be encouraged to nurture as much as girls are – it may just be the only way to address the huge child-rearing imbalance in society. A dear friend told me years ago that, every time a boy is born into her family, she gives him a baby doll to encourage him to nurture – to teach him that it’s okay to be gentle. I thought that was brilliant.
And my second point – those toddler bikes are great but somebody gave me one for my son’s first birthday and I had to hide it away for at least six to eight months because he was way too small for it. So, it’s a brilliant gift but not entirely appropriate for a one year old. They do make the little push busses etc. for smaller kids but I always found those a bit delicate and unstable.
Great points there @lisabennett you are so right about gender imbalance. My son loved my daughter’s doll stroller and used it often. He also played with her dolls for a long time too.
I have been pulled to task a number of times now about gender issues, especially by my sisters. I guess it is so ingrained that certain things are traditionally considered a boys gift or a girls gift. I actually wanted to write an article about gender at some stage… I just need to get to it!
I love your first point!!! My husband pushes our son’s stroller way more then I do. So why can’t we let them practice being fathers, pediatricians, educators, or any other occupation that has to do with children, from a young age?
I do disagree with you on your second point, though. My son wil be turning 1 next month, and we are considering buying a toddler bike, as he has shown interest in his friend’s bikes. So I think that might depend on the child. 🙂
I just wrote on my profile, asking for first birthday gift ideas, and somehow got to this forum that Lynne mentioned, and here is so many ideas. Ideas I never even thought about. Thank you very much, I must get brain storming now as my babies birthday is in September, so this could not have come at a better time. Thank you once again.
Oh double trouble turn one soon! You are going to just love the journey 🙂 When they start walking and talking you can really start to connect with them on an entirely new level. I have loved my babies since they were born but when they get older it is just so amazing to get to know them better.
I’m glad you enjoyed this article!
I must say the last 10 months has gone by so fast, and if I look back a couple of months ago, oh my….how much they have grown already an I still love every minute that I have with them. They most certainly are their own little people with each one different personalities, so yes it’s amazing getting to know their own little self each day. I will most definitely use your ideas Lynne, thank you. I just love what you have done with “Kaboutjie”, so much to see everyday and always something new. It does help a lot.
Thanks @lynettesmith 🙂
These are great ideas!
When I was a child, they had these water tables at the daycare. And on certain days they would fill it with water and all kinds of water toys and empty Stasoft and other bottles.
I could play with this for hours on end. I’m already struggling to get JD out of the bath every night, so I’m sure he would enjoy this activity very much.
A would probably invest in a trampoline when JD is a bit older. He is a bit of a dare-devil and I’m a bit apprehensive to get one now.
I bought JD a bucket with beach toys and he’s got lots of squeeky bath toys. Great idea! More great ideas are stacking cups and plastic animals or insects. He’s always playing with this. But make sure you buy the bigger size because the smaller sizes are a choking hazzard.
Push bikes are the best thing for a child. JD is always riding his back inside and outside. He has a smaller and a bigger one and he loves them both. I sit with him outside every weekend, so that he can ride up and down the driveway and paving. This is great for children to get rid of all that excess energy. He always sleep like a baby after he’s played outside for a few hours.
Our best but to date? A tractor with pedals. We bought it as a first birthday gift. My son pushed it around for hours. The progressed to fixing it with his tools. Now at nearly three he is racing up and down and carting things around in the trailer. Its really a must for a boy. We bought ours at Makro.
I got my little guy an electric ride on car. Was way over our budget but really worth it he turned 4 and still uses it. That has been his favorite toy since day1
Thank you Lynne for the information will definitely share with my friends
I’m glad you enjoyed the birthday ideas here Nuraan!
Ahhhhh this is wonderful!!! I love these ideas!!! Thank you 🙏🏻 my lil one will be turning 1 next month 😃 and I been thinking what I can buy for her. Especially to the parents and in-laws that are asking what they can get for her. Never thought of any of the above, and I think it’s amazing ideas on what to buy her. Love them.
I’m so glad this was helpful Mercia, it can be overwhelming coming up with an idea for a first birthday gift!
