Incorporating a substantial mix of fruit and vegetables into your child’s diet can prove challenging at times but there are lots of ways to get around this.
Actively involving kids in the process of making the food, and not just the consumption of it, means they will learn how their food is prepared and therefore be more inclined to eat it.
Engaging in these kinds of fun activities not only keeps them healthy but can also help with their development too.
To get you started, here are some fun fruity recipes to try with kids:
Fruit lollies
If your kids have been asking how to make ice cream, why not try these fruit lollies? It’s quick and easy to make and the kids will be eager to give you a helping hand.
You can buy the moulds and sticks from most supermarkets or order them online in advance. Once you have this sorted, you can concentrate on your ingredients.
You can choose any combination of fruits – mixed berries, strawberries, kiwi fruit and mangoes are usually easy to get hold of and work well.
Once you’ve decided on your fruits you should supervise the kids and let them carefully chop the fruit into bite-sized pieces. Next, get them to place some fruit into the moulds before topping up with lemonade, or for an even healthier twist, coconut water.
Now all that’s left to do is pop them in the freezer to set.

Fruit skewers
These take minimal effort but look extremely impressive once finished. First, choose a combination of fruits – for example, pineapple, strawberries, melon and grapes.
Then get the kids to carefully chop the fruit up into medium-sized chunks, making sure they’re not too small, otherwise they won’t stay on the skewer.
Next, get them to carefully push each piece of fruit onto the skewer until there is an even distribution. This will require some mathematics skills as they will need to keep count of how many pieces of fruit they are placing on each one.
This activity is great for development as the kids get to exercise their creativity while also working on their fine motor skills.

Fruit chips
A healthy alternative to deep fried snacks, these fruit chips are simple to make and serve as a delicious treat. These can be done with most fruits but the easiest one to start with is apple chips.
For this, you’ll need two apples cut into very thin slices (you might have to do the majority of this as it requires a sharp knife.)
Next, get the kids to lay the thinly sliced pieces of apple evenly onto a baking tray covered in parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and while you’re waiting for it to warm up, get the kids to sprinkle some cinnamon over each piece.
They will need to go into the oven for approximately 2 hours, and turned midway through. Once you’ve taken them out, leave them to cool before eating.

These fruity recipes not only result in delicious, healthy snacks but also serve as a great option when thinking of fun activities for kids. They will feel actively involved, pick up some domestic skills and also enhance their language skills as they follow instructions. And while there’s still so many more skills in food preparation and cooking they need to learn, these recipe ideas are a great start.
