How To Whiten Your Teeth At Home Naturally – Easy Steps and Instructions

There are numerous factors that tend to lower the natural sheen and whiteness of our teeth, so it’s only normal that you want to learn how to take care of this problem on your own. Paying for dentists will cost you quite a lot, not to mention the trouble of paying for a bus ticket/gas every time you take this approach.

What if I told you that there are means to whiten your teeth at home, and naturally, if I might add? Simply follow the instructions I’ve provided below and you’ll be fine in no time.

How To Whiten Your Teeth At Home Naturally

Use Baking Soda – one of the easiest ways

Simply put, baking soda is, perhaps, the most natural thing you can use to whiten your teeth – even though it’s synthetic in nature, it features natural properties which do the actual whitening. Most commercial-grade toothpastes feature baking soda, as it’s supremely effective at bringing back the old sheen to your teeth.

Most scientific studies which compare the overall efficiency of toothpastes agree on one point – those models which featured baking soda tend to remove the yellow stains and plaque from teeth. What’s more, higher concentrations of this ingredient means stronger, more pronounced effects.

That also means that you should try using baking soda at home – you don’t have to go with toothpastes. For instance, get a package of baking soda and sprinkle some on your finger – rub it against the walls of your teeth a couple of times weekly, and you can expect a whiter set of teeth in no time.

A word of advice – baking soda is quite aggressive on your teeth, so refrain from using it regularly. It removes the stains and plaque by disintegration based on chemical reactions, which could damage your teeth over time.

Apple cider – a good alternative to baking soda

The vinegar based on apple’s cider is as good as the baking soda – it basically shares the same qualities when it comes to disinfecting and cleaning of the inside areas of your mouth.

You might not like what you hear at first sight – this type of vinegar contains acetic acid. That doesn’t mean it’s dangerous, though – the acetic acid is just one of the vinegar’s components, and it’s always filtered and refined before making it to the bottle.

Simply put, acetic acid kills bacteria which are attacking your teeth, and the only reason why I’m recommending apple cider is because of its superb antibacterial potential.

The so-called “bleaching effect” of apple’s cider is just a bit inferior when compared to baking soda, but it’s certainly less aggressive. However, it’s not mild, so you definitely need to limit the flossing and mouthwashing with it to every third or fourth day.

Again, never use apple’s cider solo. Dilute the cider with water before washing your mouth for a couple of minutes. Use plain water for rinsing afterwards, so as to minimize the direct damage done to your teeth.

Apples

Fruits, Veggies – a better diet will help

Our diet is “responsible” for the health of our teeth. You’ve certainly heard “you are what you eat” before, and that statement is not so far from truth. In fact, a good diet can destroy or strengthen your teeth faster than anything else. That’s why fruits and veggies should be considered as natural teeth whiteners.

I recommend introducing these food types to your diet:

  • Apples

Apples fight bad and stale breath, but their rich fibrous content acts as a shield against plaque. Just like apple cider, apples have a portion of acids that neutralize and remove the bacteria that attack your teeth.

  • Carrots

Carrots are full of B vitamins that will not only scrub off the plaque from your teeth, but will also stimulate the amount of saliva you produce (saliva is known to be one of the most natural teeth cleaners). Eat them in rich portions whenever you can, and your teeth will be cleaner in the matter of weeks, if not days.

  • Leafy greens

We all know that greens are very healthy, but most youngsters tend to avoid them when struck by puberty due to their bad taste, thus forfeiting the chance to build strong habits regarding this type of diet.

Greens are rich in fiber, vitamins, and acidic ingredients which swiftly eliminate plaque and bacteria. What’s more, Calcium is said to be one of the key contributing factors when it comes to strengthening of your teeth.

  • Cheese

Cheese is the only type of food which won’t clean your teeth on its own. However, just like carrots and leafy greens, it’s full of calcium and proteins (Casein, for reference), which works like a charm in teeth-cleaning situations.

Take out sugar from your daily diet – strike at the source

White teeth are impossible to obtain if your daily intake of sugar is high. Why is that? Simply put, sugar promotes the Streptococcus mutans development –a form of bacteria which is one of the leading causes of plaque, as well as gingivitis.

You’ll get plenty of sugar from fruits, if you care to follow my advice regarding your diet, so there’s no need to dive in chocolate and soft drinks like you might have done before.

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Brush regularly – plain and simple, but necessary for white teeth

Even though most people already follow this, brushing your teeth irregularly will prevent you from achieving white teeth. Even if you’ve done everything I’ve recommended so far, if you do not brush regularly, your teeth can’t be helped. Consider this as a reminder more than a regular advice. If you’re looking for the best toothbrush to brush regularly, Oral Care Home is a great blog to check out!

Conclusion

Whitening your teeth might seem like a tough job, even like a chore to some, but, in fact, it’s not. Some people have already lost a fortune to their dentists for teeth whitening sessions, but, again, it’s a fact that these damage your teeth permanently.

Follow the advice I’ve given you in the sections above, and you will be able to whiten your teeth in no time, guaranteed.

I did not know you can use apple cider vinegar or baking soda on your teeth. This was an interesting read.

  2. Well I’m happy to add another three substances to use as natural teeth whitener:
    1. Strawberries or inside of banana peels are naturally whitening. Simply crush a strawberry (can also mix it with a little bicarb of soda) and rub around on the teeth for a few minutes or the same with a banana peel.
    2. Activated charcoal works wonders to whiten teeth – simply put some powder on a separate toothbrush or use a finger to gently massage it over your teeth. Leave it for a few minutes while you gawk at your horrendous pirate-like blackened teeth (:-) ) and rinse.
    3. Coconut Oil – it’s a technique called oil-pulling where you simply take some coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for as long as you can, then spit out. The caprylic acid it contains kills bacteria and whitens your teeth. (Also good as a natural sunscreen!)

  3. @mamamichelle-2 I am in hundred percent agreement with the use of charcoal and coconut oil for oil pulling, these remedies are healthier and safer to use.

Bicarbonate of soda and apple cider vinegar are extremely harmful to the enamel of your teeth, you may want to read up about it first before trying this remedy.
The acetic acid in the vinegar is terrible for the enamel of your teeth, it could cause your enamel to perish.
Besides the risk of damaging your teeth enamel, Bicarbonate of soda and apple cider vinegar have amazing results in whitening of the teeth.

When it comes to home remedies, it is always best to research before use.
    All the best. 😊

  4. Thanks for this great article.

I shared a forum topic a while ago with the same topic and I actually thought baking soda to be a great remedy. Not just for whitening of teeth but it has numerous other uses and health benefits. Whenever I have heartburn, I don’t resort to Rennies or any other over the counter remedies, I drink a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. It works every time and fast too.

I think it differs from one person to another. Some people will have a negative experience because they might be more prone to allergies or other medical factors relating to certain foods.

As mentioned in my comments on that same topic, I’m convinced that if used in moderation it would have the desired effect without any negative side effects or results.

I’m glad to see that there are a few other fruits and vegetables mentioned here that I didn’t have listed and the good news are that you have most of these in your home. One of the fruits mentioned in my topic was Oranges. They are very good for healthy gums BUT must also be used in moderation because the acid in vitamin rich foods can break down the enamel on one’s teeth.

Just another example that most remedies are great but not for daily use.

I’m drinking a lukewarm glass of water with apple cider vinegar most mornings. I wonder if that will have a positive effect on my teeth? Which means I can kill two flies with one swat? 🙂
