Easy Homemade Waffles Recipe With Toppings Ideas

My kids and hubby really love waffles so when we saw a waffle machine a while back at Checkers my kids begged me to buy one. Since we are not getting out much due to the pandemic and missing out on the waffles they used to enjoy at Wimpy and Spur I decided to buy it and give it a go making them at home.

Easy Homemade Waffles Recipe with Toppings ideas

The waffle machine I bought is the Ottimo ST-05A and it currently costs R249 at Checkers. I’ve never owned a waffle machine before so I can’t compare it to any other waffle machine but it does the job well enough for the price I paid. I feel that it does cook the waffles a bit unevenly and I find cleaning the back of the machine a pain as the waffle batter squeezes out onto a cord that is not easy to clean. Other than those two gripes I really do like this waffle machine. We use it often and my kids go crazy for the waffles.

Easy Homemade Waffles Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 4 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1½ cups of warm milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

Method:

  • Mix the flour, salt, baking powder and sugar in a bowl
  • In a separate bowl beat the eggs then stir in the milk, melted butter and vanilla
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and beat until just mixed
  • Spoon the batter into the waffle machine and close it
  • Take the waffles out when they are golden brown and serve with your choice of toppings

This waffle recipe makes a total of 10 waffles – it does 2 waffles at a time in the machine so it does not take long at all to make as it is a few minutes in the machine for each batch.

Waffle Toppings Ideas

We had two extra kids for the day recently and I had left over caramel from cupcakes I had made and when I asked online what I should do with the left over caramel Judy from Fun Mamma SA said I should make waffles. So I decided to make the day exciting by making it waffle day! I asked my kids what other toppings they wanted me to get them and according to them these are the best sweet toppings for waffles:

Sweet Waffle Toppings:

  • Crushed Flakes
  • Crushed Oreos
  • Bar Ones cut into small pieces
  • Caramel
  • Golden Syrup
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Vanilla ice cream

I let the kids go loose and they went wild. Of course you may want to serve waffles in a healthier way!

Healthier Waffle Toppings:

  • Yoghurt
  • Berries
  • Banana
  • Peanut butter
  • Almond butter
  • Cinnamon

Make sure to play around with different ideas and please feel free to share your waffle toppings ideas with me in the comments!

How To Freeze Homemade Waffles

Waffles freeze really well so if you need something that you can grab and heat quickly for your kids this is a fantastic option, even for breakfasts, of course then leave out all the sweet options and opt for the healthier options mentioned above! I’m a huge fan of freezing meals to make my life easier, so double up your recipe and freeze the extra waffles to make your life easier.

Here’s how to freeze your waffles:

  • Allow your waffles to cool completely
  • Place your waffles on baking paper on a tray in the freezer for a few hours until they are fully frozen
  • When your waffles are completely frozen place them in a freezer bag, make sure to remove as much air as possible

They can be frozen for up to 3 months. You can reheat your waffles directly from frozen using your microwave, toaster or oven.

Conclusion:

If you are considering getting your own waffle machine I highly recommend it, the kids really love it and we have fun each time. Plus although the machine may cost a few hundred bucks initially making your own batter is cost effective from then on since the recipe makes 10 waffles in total each time.
