Times goes by fast, and before you know it, it’s almost the end of 2018. With Halloween done and Thanksgiving and the Yuletide season coming, it’s another time to change decorations to suit the upcoming holidays. Updating your home decor to keep up with the changing of seasons can be time-consuming and sometimes expensive, so how can you keep up as a busy mom on a budget?
DIY is the answer to that question. There are decors that can create a lot of impact on your visitors and those who happen to see your decorations, and the best thing about DIY decors is they are easy to make.
Don’t believe it? Read below for ideas on how to make DIY holiday home decors.
Washable Snowflakes
This is a good DIY project if you have a place that has a lot of mirrors or glass panels. Take a white washable paint marker, and go to town with drawing snowflakes on them. The snowflakes can be small or big, in random patterns or specific designations, whatever you want them to be. The great thing about this idea is that you can erase everything once the holidays have passed, and should you make any mistakes with drawings, those can easily be removed with a simple wipe.
Herb Ornament Air Freshener
Bring good cheer and sweet-smelling air to the room with a handmade ornament with natural air freshener. This DIY project involves several sheets of cardboard, some herbs, and strings to hang them up with.
Cut out appropriate festive shapes like stars, bells, and trees with the cardboard. Poke holes on the cut shapes, and place herbs like sage, oregano, parsley, thyme, and rosemary to make the air smell fresh when you hang them up.
Holiday Curtains
If you’ve always had a large window with no curtains because you think that curved or custom windows are difficult to find curved rods for, you’re wrong. There are stores that specialize in providing the correct custom rods, so you can hang your special curtains just in time for the holiday season.
Go simple or go ham with your Christmas curtains; the choice is up to you. If you want to DIY your own curtains, you can go with that as well.
Festive Centerpiece
When all your decorations are up and lights are blinking as they should be, you may feel like there’s something missing in your holiday decorations. If you don’t have one already, it could be because you’re missing a centerpiece on the living room table. A centerpiece can make any room more presentable especially if you’re hoping to up your holiday decorating game.
There are a lot of DIY centerpiece tutorials for Christmas on the internet, but if you want to take yours to the next level, consider making it an edible one. That is, make sure that your centerpiece is eye-catching because it contains goodies and treats for everyone. Making it is really simple and cheap too.
All you’ll need are candy treats and mini chocolate bars with decorative baubles and some hot glue. Put everything together in a fancy glass vase to make the whole thing look like a million bucks. Make sure to get the big variety if you wish to put more sweets inside.
Holiday Wreath Made Out of Scarves
This is simple enough and especially great if you have an excess of scarves you don’t use anymore. Along with it, you’ll need a wire wreath frame and some time to cover the wire frame. You can choose to make use of one or more scarves. There’s no gluing or cutting needed in this project, so if you want to use the scarves again, you may definitely do so.
Decorate with Treats
Bags of peppermint and candy canes don’t cost much since Thanksgiving and Christmas are near. Although sweets are nice to give out to your children, nephews, and nieces, that much sugar may not be too good for them. To ensure that they don’t overindulge, use these sugary treats to decorate your homes instead.
The candy canes look good hooked under a well-placed bough around the house. The red-and-white stripes give a stark contrast to the green of the branch. If the peppermints have a hole in the center, string them together to make Christmas-tree ornaments in shapes you like. If not, you can glue them together using a hot glue gun.
Snowflake Popsicle Sticks
This is a popular DIY project that can be done with the whole family. You’ll need popsicle sticks, glue, spray paint, and some imagination. Make this project with your family and friends, and have a contest on who can make the most intricate or creative snowflakes out of the popsicle sticks. When everything’s glued and dried, take the finished items outside, and go over them with white spray paint, and let them dry.
Think Repurposing
It’s easy to just buy everything when you’re a busy mom and you don’t have a lot of time for making your own decorations. While it’s not a bad idea to spend money on things, it can be wasteful if you have a habit of changing decors every year. If you want new decor every holiday, consider re-purposing recyclable stuff, and challenge your creativity by turning things like glass bottles into festive ornamentation.
