Halloween is one of the most popular holidays that is celebrated every year on October the 31st. People and kids alike dress up, carve pumpkins, go to haunted houses or go trick or treating.
Trick or treating is a tradition that started in the Middle-ages when children and adults from the poor households used to disguise themselves in costumes and go around door to door during the celebration of Hallowmas and begged for money or food in exchange for prayers and songs, often on behalf of the dead. This tradition was called “souling”and the children were called “soulers”.
Where did Halloween come from?
This practice is a Celtic tradition which was celebrated at the end of the year when people dressed up as evil spirits. The Celts believed that the dead and the living would overlap as we moved from the one year to the next and that demons would roam the earth again. Dressing up was used as a defense mechanism by guising yourself when encountering a real demon, tricking them into thinking you were one of them.
During later years the Catholic church turned the demon dress-up party into “All Hallows Eve”, “All Soul’s day” and “All Saints day” and had people dressing up as saints, angels or demons.
