When the school holidays kick off at the end of the year, kids are a bundle of uncontainable energy. And who can blame them? The prospect of unwinding for a month would make even the most stoic adult bounce off the walls. There’s just one problem: one month is a lot longer than most of us realise. There’s only so much TV a kid can watch before they’re counting down to the beginning of another academic year.
The last thing you want to hear from your kid this festive season are the words, “Mom, I’m bored”. These fun activities for kids can prevent that from happening:

Craft Day
Your kids don’t know what they’re missing out on if they’ve never dived into the world of imaginative fun that’s in a craft box. There are plenty of crafts for kids to try out during the holidays, from canvas paintings to paper dreamcatchers. Crafts are an easy, inexpensive way to keep your kids entertained while stimulating their creativity.
Backyard Colour War
Outdoor activities for kids aren’t limited to popular sports such as soccer and netball. There are plenty of outdoor recreational activities that can take place in the comfort of your backyard, one of which is a colour war. Arm each kid with a water gun filled with a food colouring and water solution. Then play a paintball-style game where players try to tag each other with their colours. But there’s a catch: the only tags that count are back, chest, or stomach shots. Headshots are strictly forbidden. Players are eliminated once they’ve been “tagged” with all the other colours, and the last kid standing wins.
DIY Science Experiments
Science experiments aren’t just about bunsen burners and beakers. Common household items can be used to demonstrate complex scientific laws. For instance, a jar with a lid, 1/3 of a cup of water, ice and hairspray can be used to form a cloud. An empty water bottle, vegetable oil, water, food colouring and an antacid tablet are all you need to make your own lava lamp. Google a few DIY science experiments and see which household items you can use to keep your kids entertained.
Turn the Dining Table into a Tent
If your kids are short enough to fit under the dining table, that trusty piece of furniture can be turned into a tent. You won’t need much to get the job done; a few sheets can be draped over the table to get things going. Now’s also the perfect time to blow the dust off your LED lantern. As soon as night falls, switch off the lights and let your kids go under their DIY tent with a lantern to recreate an outdoor camping experience.
Take Them Out
No kid is comfortable with the idea of spending an entire holiday at home. Set aside some time to take your kids out at least once during the school holidays. Just make sure you take them to a Covid-ready restaurant. Wimpy’s hygiene policy covers everything that’s needed to make sure your family can dine safely. Every kid’s meal comes with a toy which is bound to keep your kids entertained. And with a kid’s menu that’s sure to fill even the emptiest stomach, you have more than enough reason to pop in for a bite.
You don’t have to break the bank to keep boredom at bay during the school holidays. A bit of planning can save you a lot of money and effort. Keep these tips in mind as you spend the next month at home with your kids.
These are such great ideas… my daughter and I are currently doing a holiday project she wants a doll house big enough to have her dolls in and that a bit expensive so we making one out of boxes its quite fun and takes up a lot of our time
