How to get Blu Tack out of hair

How to get Blu Tack out of Hair (also known as Prestik)

I have been meaning to share this cool parenting hack with everyone for a while now, but I just haven’t found the time to get this post up until now. I am sure that every mom will at some stage need to know how to get Blu Tack out of hair easily,  without a fuss and without cutting a huge chunk of hair off. My time came in the second term of school this year.

The teacher sent me a whatsapp message which I didn’t see so when I arrived at the playschool there was a very worried looking teacher and a little girl with a big clump of Blu Tack stuck in her hair.

Honestly I think sometime us mommy bloggers can come across as a little crazy because I was pleased as punch. I had been hearing how parenting hacks and how to’s are becoming so popular, especially on Youtube.

I had been wondering what to start with and how to go about it and suddenly an opportunity jumps into my lap.

Upon getting home I quickly did some research and came up with two options for things that I had on hand… using Peanut Butter or using Baby Oil.

I’m not too sure about you but putting Peanut Butter into my daughter’s hair just sounded a little bit gross to me so I chose to go with the Baby Oil method for getting Blu Tack out of hair.

Although I found out what to use none of the websites actually gave me any details on how to get the Blu Tack out using baby oil or peanut butter.

Yes of course I must put the baby oil onto the hair and Blu Tack but then what?

How to get Blu Tack/ Prestik out of hair

So here’s how to do it. Simply pour a good amount of baby oil onto the area where the Blu Tack is stuck in the hair. Work the baby oil into the Blu Tack but don’t try and pull it the Blu Tack out yet.

Leave the baby oil to soak in for about 5 minutes. Then simply pull the Blu Tack out. The Blu Tack will almost dissolve away, so if it is not coming out immediately and very easy you need to leave it a little longer.

You can see exactly what I mean in my Youtube video. I filmed the process and I wasn’t quite sure how to go about it while I was doing it, so I tried to work it out and it took a long time.

Suddenly the Blu Tack just dissolved and came out really easily. You will be able to do it so much easier now that I did the research and experiment for you!

Good luck and I hope this parenting hack makes your life so much easier!

Oh and next time it happens I will be brave and experiment with Peanut Butter.

Have you ever got Blu Tack stuck in your hair or your child’s hair?

  1. This is something to remember…

  2. I used ice to get gum out..dont know of it will work on blue tac as well..:)

    • Yes, I heard of ice for chewing gum but I didn’t see anyone saying you would use it for Blu Tack… I did wonder about that when I was googling how to get Blu Tack out of hair!

I am sure this was not the last experience I will have with it, so I will try something new each time 🙂

  3. This is a great tip to remember 🙂 My daughter who is 4yrs old, just two weeks ago thought it would be a good idea to put super glue in her hair…. lol
Thank goodness we saw it just as it happened so we quickly rushed her to the bathroom applied loads of conditioner!!! we were lucky – haha

    • Oh wow, I haven’t had super glue yet but I’m sure my day will come. I would think if that gets just a minute to set then you will be cutting chunks of hair out.

      • I was terrified as she has so little hair as it is – so grateful for conditioner 😛

      • LOL yeah my daughter also doesn’t have much hair! But thankfully there was no damage. I would’ve freaked if it was superglue!

  4. Sjoh. Tx for sharing.
Last week my baby was lying on great grandmas bed and got some prestik stuck in her hair. I pulled it out slowly.
    She didnt like it.
    Will remember this one!!!

  5. One to save again till i get to the situation…hehehe

  6. Awesome! Something to remember. I remember when i was six my “friend” at preschool put prestik into my hair. Think my mom had to cut it out

Thanks for sharing @lynne. This really is an amazing hack!

Your daughter is such a cutie pie and has the most beautiful blue eyes. 🙂

The problem with Prestik is, it always seems to get stuck in the most peculiar places. Having to cut out a piece of Prestik would really leave an ugly gap that would be very unsightly.

I wonder if this would actually work for a piece of gum as well? When we were children we didn’t have a lot of incidents with Prestik but I got gum stuck in my hair a few times growing up.

I remember eating gum the one day in the car and I managed to get it all over my hands. It was sticky and disgusting and I end up crying about it. Baby oil is something that we always have in our home and it smells just divine!

I see that it loosens the Prestik quite well and is easily removed. Much better solution than having to resort to cutting.

I would remember the peanut butter trick as well. Another item we always have at home.

  8. Thanks for the tip! And for anyone without baby oil, or coconut oil as someone suggested elsewhere, it turns out olive oil does the trick too! 🤪

  9. lmao i was wondering what the heck bluetack was,

  10. Bluetack??? Prestick lol, this is the second time i came accross something that i knew nothing about lol i will use this word going forward. I wonder if Ice helps… i know if you use ice it will remove gum

    • Tanya I’ve heard ice helps for chewing gum but not for Prestik… but I’ve never tried ice for either so I can’t be sure.

  11. Amazing I will definitely keep this one in mind 👍🤗
