Each year at the end of February/early March, Jewish communities around the globe celebrate Purim – the most festive celebration on the Jewish calender, with feasting, fun and fancy-dress to commemorate the defeat of Haman, an advisor to the Persian king some 2500 years ago who had plotted to massacre the Jewish people in Persia but who was thwarted in his plans by Esther, the King’s second wife, who was secretly Jewish.
Since then, Purim has become highly symbolic for Jewish people as a time to celebrate their salvation when circumstances seemed bleak and stacked against them. No doubt Purim this year, from the evening of Thursday 25th February, until the evening of Friday 26th, will provide some brightness and relief after a year of Covid19, stress, monotony and lockdowns.
In Israel and Jewish communities elsewhere, Purim is marked each year with raucous and colourful street parades, dancing and parties to rival those of Brazil and New Orleans. While celebrations in 2021 might be a bit (or a lot!) more subdued in many places, it will still be a joyful time for Jewish families to gather, dress up, exchange gifts of traditional foods, feast, and make donations to the poor.
They will also read or listen to the Megillah (the book of Esther in the Hebrew Bible, the Torah) twice, either at home or in Synagogue, drowning out any mention of Haman’s name by shouting, booing or using noisemakers, and more recently, smartphone apps made specifically for this!
Happy Family Organics is excited to celebrate Purim 2021, and the fact that their extensive range of organic baby and toddler foods have been officially certified as Kosher. To receive Kosher certification, manufacturers must follow strict guidelines under Jewish law in terms of the way food is prepared and the ingredients used.
