Migration – In Cinemas 22 December 2023

This holiday season, Illumination, creators of this year’s record-shattering The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the blockbuster Minions, Despicable Me, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets franchises, invites you to take flight into the thrill of the unknown with a funny, feathered family vacation like no other in the action-packed new original comedy, Migration.

The Mallard family is in a bit of rut. While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen—the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.  As the Mallards make their way South for the winter, their well-laid plans quickly go awry.

The experience will inspire them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, while teaching them more about each other—and themselves—than they ever imagined.

Migration is a funny, emotional and visually stunning film that explores universal themes of family, curiosity and the rewards of stepping outside your comfort zone.

The Ducks

The Migration filmmakers were very deliberate in how ducks and birds were portrayed in the film, with the ambition of reflecting them as true-to-form as possible. Director Benjamin Renner did his own deep research into movement patterns of ducks to ensure that the accuracy and level of detail was as precise as possible to reflect the beauty of these avian creatures. “When it came to creating the look of the ducks, Chris Meledandri emphasised that ducks are naturally funny and cartoony, even without any added elements,” Renner says. “So, our goal was to capture that essence of real ducks and their comedic behaviour. I watched many duck videos and observed their movements and behaviours. We wanted the ducks to have a realistic appearance and act in relatable ways, especially because the movie explores complex human emotions and family dynamics. Each character had specific details that made them relatable and unique.”
