Soil Lavender Essential Oil

For best results, this homemade remedy must be left in overnight before rinsing it out in the morning.

Remedy: Mix 8-10 drops of pure lavender essential oil with 4 teaspoons of carrier oil and massage it into the scalp.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood essential oil does wonders for the hair and scalp. It has a woodsy and warm aroma, promotes dandruff control as well as treating hair loss issues. Remedy: Mix 2-3 drops of cedarwood essential oil with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and massage it through the hair and into the scalp. Or you can mix 5 drops of cedarwood essential oil with one tablespoon of your regular shampoo and wash your hair as normal.

Soil Peppermint Essential Oil

It is perfect for people with dry scalp. It might be too pungent for people with sensitive skin which may cause skin irritation.  It’s best to do a skin patch test beforehand just to be sure.

Remedy: Mix 5 drops of peppermint drops with 5 drops of lavender essential oils and two warmed up tablespoons of coconut oil. Massage the mixture into the scalp and leave in for twenty minutes. Shampoo out afterwards.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary oil is considered as one of the best essential oils for hair growth and thickness and research showed that it acts just as well as conventional topical hair loss treatments like minoxidil.

Remedy: Blend 10 drops of rosemary oil with 3 heated teaspoons of olive oil. The mixture must be evenly distributed over the scalp and throughout the hair. A towel that was dipped in hot water must be wrapped around the hair. Leave on for half an hour and then shampoo hair as usual. The recommended times to do this is once a month.

Thyme Essential Oil

When purchasing thyme essential oil, avoid red thyme that contains thymol as it can irritate the skin. Rather opt for linalool thyme which is a natural skin softener. Thyme boost blood flow and moisturizes hair follicles that is vital for healthy hair growth. This ingredient is often added to hair products to prevent hair loss. Thyme essential oil must be used in moderation and blended with a carrier oil since it is a potent oil.

Remedy: Blend 2 drops of thyme essential oil with 5 drops of lavender essential oil and 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Massage into the scalp and leave on for twenty minutes. Shampoo it out afterwards.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

This essential oil has a natural woody, nutty and musky aroma and is know for containing phytoestrogen which is ideal for promoting hair growth and prevention or reversal of premature balding. When massaged into the scalp, it efficiently controls dandruff issues as well as normalizing oil production.

This essential oil is also perfect for managing frizzy or curly hair. Clary sage contains linalyl acetate which is a natural remedy to reduce skin inflammation. It can be used as an antibacterial remedy for rashes, assist with stress relief and balancing of hormones. As clary sage reduces cortisol levels in the body, it acts as a natural remedy for healing stress-induced hair loss conditions.

Warning: clary sage essential oil must not be used by pregnant women, as contractions can be induced.

Remedy: Mix One to two teaspoons of coconut oil with ten drops of clary sage. Gently massage into the scalp while brushing every strand of hair, leaving the hair shiny and soft and to remedy dry hair.

Tip: Clary sage works especially well with jojoba as a carrier oil and the two can work in conjunction regulating oil production on your skin therefore preventing flaky patches that lead to dandruff. For effective stress relief associated with hair loss, you can add a few drops to your temples, wrists or underneath your feet.

To promote hair growth, equal parts of jojoba oil and clary sage can be mixed and massage into the scalp. Lave on for 30 minutes and shampoo out afterwards.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Chamomile essential oil has a lovely apple-like flavour and is pale blue-green in colour. You get two types of chamomile namely German and Roman. They both contain the same properties, but the Roman is better to promote hair growth.

Chamomile essential oil contains natural anti-inflammatory properties and can be massaged directly into the scalp to provide relief for an itchy and dry scalp. It helps to prevent dandruff, dermatitis and psoriasis. This oil is non-greasy, therefore there’s no need to wash it out afterwards unless you prefer to do so.

But did you know that chamomile essential oil can be used as a natural hair lightener? By adding 5 drops of chamomile essential oil to a tablespoon of sea salt on a third cup of baking soda and then mixing it into a paste by using warm water you can make your own hair lightening paste. Apply the mixture to the hair and massage into the base of the hair and the scalp. Leave on for about 30 minutes to an hour and rinse it out. For a bolder effect you can sit in the sun while having the paste applied to your hair.

Remedy: Massage three drops of essential oil mixed with two tablespoons of jojoba oil into the scalp as needed.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli is popularly used as a perfume in exotic faraway destinations such as Philippine’s, India and Indonesia. This oil’s aroma is sensual, earthy and deep and only a small amount needs to be used as the aroma is quite potent. It contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory compounds which makes it the perfect choice for treating dry scalp or other skin-related issues.  This oil comes highly recommended for people suffering from eczema, dermatitis and dandruff which is often the underlying cause of hair loss. Remedy: Mix two tablespoons of Argan oil (great compliment to the patchouli), 5-6 drops of rosemary essential oil and 2-3 drops of patchouli essential oil and blend into the scalp. Leave on for 1-2 hours and shampoo out afterwards.

Lemon Essential Oil

This oil helps to treat secondary infections that often worsen acne or dandruff as it has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties.

Lemons contains nutrients that include calcium, magnesium, citric acid, pectin, flavonoids and vitamin C which has amazing benefits for promoting hair growth:

  4. I did not loose hair immediately after giving birth. I began to loose it towards the 9th month post partum,2 years later I was really forced to cut my hair because the damage was visible. I used every iol I could come up with to try and save the hair but nothing helped. Now my hair is short and I am already using oils for my hair and it is helping.
