How To Decide On A New Hairstyle

Getting yourself a new haircut can be very powerful. You will go from having a bad hair day into the best one ever, but the new layer that has been added to your head will improve your self-confidence significantly, and you will have the feeling of being able to take the world for weeks to come. But if you happen to get a bad haircut you will either want to kill the hairstylist or cry for many days after the appointment.

So if you want to avoid going through all this, Mark Townsend, a hair guru, told Cosmopolitan.com some important things you will need to put into consideration before getting a haircut.

How To Decide On A New Hairstyle

  1. Know Your Face Shape

Doing this will help you know whether you have an oval, square, or heart-shaped face. When you do this, it is much easier to figure out the best cut for you. Mark Townsend recommends checking the jawline to determine the shape of your face – if the jawline is jutting out more towards the sides, your face is square (example is Olivia Wilde); if the jawline is rounded from the chin to the ears, then your face is round (example Christina Ricci); If the chin is somewhat pointy and the jaw goes up at an angle, then you got an oval shaped face (example Sarah Jessica Parker); and if the chin is the pointiest part of the face and the jawline is curving in, your face is heart-shaped (example Reese Whitherspoon) – then drawing the shape of your face on a paper.

The main goal is having your face look a little more oval, which is the most desired one, then see if you end up with an oval in the center. If it does, then that is the right option for you because it suits the face. (This is not something hard that you can’t do; if you are able to draw stick figures, this shouldn’t be hard). Do you have an oval face? Then that is great for you because it means you can have any style and pull it off.

  1. Know The Texture Of Your Hair

If you have coarse, curly hair, don’t expect to ask the hairdresser to give you the same one as Blake Lively then expect to walk out of there that way, because there is no haircut that is able to turn your hair into waves like theirs. This is the same case with the opposite texture: If your hair is thin and fine, you cannot have Beyoncé’s volume and texture. According to Propaganda Hair Group the best approach is looking for celebs that have the same hair texture as you, then take the picture and show the stylist.

  1. Have Realistic Expectations

When trying out a new haircut from an inspiration from someone like a celebrity, it is important to remember that the hair you are obsessed is probably full of extensions, and have a stylist who spends many hours working on their hair, and there is no one going to follow you around ensuring your hair looks great. You should be more realistic when you go to the salon. Have a talk with the stylist so as to know what is possible for you, whether you are going to get and keep up with extensions, or cut your hair into a style that is easy to maintain, to getting the perfect style that will blow in the wind when you walk.

  1. Consider Your Lifestyle

If you think you will not have enough time to do your hair, then it is a good idea to go with a style that will still look good even if you don’t have to spend time on it every day (a good example is Alexa Chung). If you are the type of girl who has enough time to style her hair, then go for an hairstyle that needs high maintenance.

  1. Ensure You Are Ready To Have A Haircut

If it is just a trim, it’s okay. When you decide to cut your hair, there is nothing you can do to get it back. If you have had hair reaching your breast for the most part of your life then you decide you want a pixie or a bob, take about of month to think about it before doing it. If it is something that is on your mind when you go to bed and the first thing you wake up, you should go for it.

  1. Great topic @lynne.

To me a woman’s hair is her crown. She should wear it with pride.
I know when I’m having a bad hair day, then my whole day is ruined. I can tell you that that I’ve had enough good and bad hair cut experiences to give me a pretty good idea of what I like and what suits me.
Having the right hairdresser also makes all the difference.
When I go to my hairdresser, I want to feel like I’m connecting with her. That she “gets”me as a person and let her instincts guide her in which hair cut will suit me best and not be afraid to speak up and give her recommendation.
And I also don’t want a hairdresser that is too bossy and end up telling me what to do.
Once you found the right hairdresser, you would look forward to your next appointment. I always see this as me time.
Visiting a friend, have a nice chat and sharing a cup of coffee (yes, some hair dressers have great coffee) with while she creates magic on my head. And people do tend to confide in their hairdressers a lot. Maybe it’s because a hairdresser is a friend but also a professional that is somewhat objective.
I’ve seen so many times that the wrong hairstyle can make a person look older or completely different and not flattering at all.
And I never manage to blow my hair out quite the way that my hairdresser does. It’s like her brush is her magic wand.
No one can deny that having a good hair cut makes you feel like a million dollars.

    • Oh I know exactly what you mean @loupie! I have tried to blow dry my hair but I can never get it looking great. That is one thing I just love about going to the hairdresser.

I love going to the hairdresser but I literally manage to go about once a year. Luckily my hair is long so there is not much styling to it but it is still such a treat isn’t it? I used to wear my hair short and try out different styles but now that I am a mom I find it hard to find the time to have my hair done regularly plus my hubby loves my hair long!

  2. I always look at my favourite celebrities and want to style my hair accordingly. Big mistake! It will really look nice for a day or two but afterwards it will end up in a ponytail. I think it is so important to consider your lifestyle and also your face shape.

    • Oh yes lifestyle comes in big time for me @doreeno1- I am so busy with my kids that I just have my hair in a ponytail most days… and when I don’t get a chance to wash it a “mom bun” lol.

  3. I just had my hair cut this weekend and I’m not 100% sure if I did the right thing. I was relieved to let the long hair go because i feel that the older you get, your hair thins out and it does not look great to have long, super thin hair. I needed a haircut. I enjoyed having the time out in the hairdressers chair but i must admit, i missed my hair this morning. I just basically cut it bob style. I also considered my lifestyle. I am doing yoga twice a week and i walk most mornings so i get quite sweaty and i have to wash and blow dry every day. It was a bit of a task when i had the long hair but it is much more manageable now that it is shoulder length. I can even just wash and go and have a bit of a frizz. I must admit the kids loved my new hairstyle. They said i looked so much younger which made me quite happy. Hubby wasn’t blown over because he likes the long hair. I told the girl cutting my hair that i must at least be able to make a ponytail. In any case…What is a mommy without her ponytail ?!?!

    • @ Gayle, you are more then correct when comes to convenience every mommy does not want any hair hovering all over the shore.
However, it is just hair and will grow back, it is nothing to get all worked up over about.
I have returned many times from the salon not happy with the outcome of what I wanted versus what I ended up with, if anything I still made it work out.

  4. I remember when I was in varsity and I went to my regular hairdresser for a bob and before I knew it he had cut my hair into a step. I felt so crap for so long that now I make 100% sure I want the hairstyle. Oh it didn’t help either that it was on April fool’s day. One thing I did learn my face shape is not suited for that style.

    • Oh no that must have been terrible. A really bad April fools joke. Take the positive out of the situation, at least now you know what suits you and what not 😉

    • Argh shame that must of been a very daunting day down memory lane.
Lesson learnt and shall never be repeated again.

  5. I am praying my new baby will have curly hair like I do. I honestly won’t know what to do with her hair if it is straight. I feel rather silly for admitting this in black and white. I just love my curly hair. It’s so easy once you learn to accept and deal with the frizz and perpetual dryness. Please hold thumbs that she has curly hair girls.
