The World of Birds in Hout Bay is a sanctuary for birds, monkeys and other animals. It is the largest bird park in African and one of the largest in the world. Anyone that has grown up in Cape Town is sure to have been there at least once. I remember my first trip to the World Of Birds when I was in primary school and upon arrival a monkey stole my then R1 entry fee that I was supposed to give the teacher!
Last weekend I was in Cape Town visiting my sister and some friends and we managed to find some time to visit the World Of Birds again.

They have over 3000 birds and over 400 different species. They also have monkeys, meerkats, porcupines, tortoises, reptiles and many more animals to see.
You can enter the Monkey Jungle and spend some time having close encounters with Squirrel Monkeys between 11h30 – 13h00 and again from 14h00 – 15h30. The monkeys are mischievous and inquisitive. They love getting into bags and making off with anything they can so make sure to pack away any sunglasses and remove your earrings and clips!
One of the monkeys was determined to get my daughter’s Lagoona Doll and even when we left the Monkey Jungle it had a last try to open my backpack and get her out!
I just wish that I had packed my Nikon Coolpix B500 camera to take more pics rather than using my phone.
You can have lunch or buy some snacks from the Robin’s Nest Restaurant inside the World Of Birds, or you can bring your own food to have a picnic at Flamingo Terrace which is next to the Flamingoes.
There are children’s pushcarts available for hire at R20 and most areas are accessible by wheelchair. Anyone in a wheelchair gets to visit World Of Birds at no charge.
Adults pay R120, Children 45 and Pensioners and Students (with cards) pay R75. Schools and group bookings are available too if you contact their booking office.
When you visit World Of Birds I suggest that you make sure you have at least 3 hours available to roam around and see everything. We spent over an hour sitting in the Monkey Jungle, which is our favorite part of the World Of Birds. The tropical garden setting is spread out in a maze over 4 hectares of land – be sure to use the map you are given when you enter to ensure that you don’t miss anything.
You can also make sure to visit each of these sections at feeding times:
- Penguins 11h30 – 15h30
- Pelicans 12h30
- Comorants 13h30
- Birds Of Prey 16h15
The World Of Birds is open from 09h00 to 17h00 every single day of the year.
