Have you tried out the new VR Goggles for kids from Spur Steak Ranches yet?
I don’t know about you but I love anything that keeps my kids busy and entertained for any length of time, so when we got these Spur Goggles I was so chuffed to see how well they entertained my kids!
They cost just R20 from the Spur and all you do is download some virtual reality games and videos onto your phone and then you pop your phone into the cardboard reality goggles and off you go!
You can download some cool virtual reality apps directly from the Spur website or you can take a browse around the Google Playstore to see what other VR goggles apps you can find.
On the Spur website it says that the following phones are compatible:
- Samsung: Galaxy S4, S5, S6, S7 and Nexus.
- Apple: iPhone 5, 5s, 6, 6s.
- Google: Nexus 4 and 5.
- Motorola: Moto X
I have a really cheap Samsung Smartphone so there were a good few apps that were not compatible with my phone, so if this happens to you too then browse around because there will be something that works on your Smartphone.
You can get games but you can also try out the educational apps, like the Aquarium which was hands down my kids favourite and the one that they spent the most time on. You see a whole lot of sea creatures and when you focus on one the app gives information about that sea animal.
Here are my kids playing with the Spur Goggles with the Aquarium app:
The next favourite that we downloaded, which my kids said was their favourite but they very clearly enjoyed the sea creatures more was the Jurassic Park app.
It really captivated them in the beginning but then my daughter started getting annoyed because there weren’t a lot of dinosaurs and they barely moved!
So in a nutshell, lots of fun to be had and at such a low cost that I highly recommend that you give this a go! I already posted a few videos on social media and some moms have come back to me saying that their kids have also had a ball… I am also assuming that they had better phones than me because they said that they had access to all the apps!
Have you tried the Spur Goggles yet?
Dear Parents, please see:The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reinforces its existing recommendations on limiting cell phone use for children and teenagers. The AAP also reminds parents that cell phones are not toys, and are not recommended for to play with..Children are not just little adults; their growing minds and bodies make them uniquely vulnerable to the effects of the environment around them, including cell phone radiation. The AAP recommends limiting both children’s screen time and exposure from cell phones and other devices emitting radiation from electromagnetic fields (EMF’s)
The Environmental Health Trust has got an excellent website on this issue. See the Scientific imaging that shows how children absorb radiation from Smartphones in Virtual reality cardboard positions.
Cell phone radiation is a Class 2B carcinogen. Many scientists worldwide are asking for the classification to be upgraded to a Class 1A carcinogen. The concerns are not just cancer, it has been tied to a myriad of other issues like ADD,ADHD,ASD, EHS(Electrohypersensitivity) etc.
We need to apply the Precautionary Principle and the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) Principle regarding our kids and cell phone radiation.
I have looked at this toy – nowhere does it give any warnings about cell phone radiation and the proximity to the child’s brain. It does not even suggest putting the phone on airplane mode to reduce the risk. All it states is: ‘stay seated’. Also note: ‘Spur cannot be held responsible for any loss, damage or injury sustained during the use of the device.
The Spur Goggles and experiences are not recommended for use by children with epilepsy or similar conditions.’
Hi Wilma
Thanks for sharing this information.
I think in this day and age it is going to be a little tricky to keep kids away from cell phones and other devices. Surely letting kids have a few minutes of fun playing on a phone can’t be a life and death situation?
I have seen this but I was a bit skeptical. Will definitely give it a go next time we go to Spur 🙂
Very cool but havent seen it here. Will ask next time.
@lynne do spur keep these all the time was it just limited time offer or can you purchase anytime…would like to go check if our spurs might have some of them.
