Having a braai is always cause for celebration in South Africa, there is a reason why Heritage Day is also known as Braai Day. Let’s face it there is nothing better than having a braai with family and friends over the weekends no matter the season. We braai every single weekend at home. While a huge emphasis may be placed on the meat and what goes on the braai the salads and sides are equally as important and can make a braai extra special. Here are some fantastic braai salad recipes and sides for your next braai.
Braai Salad Recipes
Let’s face it a braai is just not complete without a salad or two. Here are some standard braai salads along with some more interesting salads to add to your braai.
Best Braai Potato Salad
Potato salad is one of the best braai salads, it will always go down a treat with any crowd.
While you can simply boil potatoes and throw mayonnaise on them you can also put some extra effort in and make the best potato salad ever. There are some simple things you can do to make your potato salad incredibly good.
Tips for making the best potato salad:
- Avoid using baking potatoes, rather opt for small, thin skinned potatoes.
- Cook your potatoes whole with the skin and add plenty of salt to the water (remove the skins after cooked and cooled).
- Bring your potatoes to the boil then turn down the heat to simmer them until done rather than keep it boiling until done.
- Your potatoes are cooked when you can push a fork through the middle – don’t overcook your potatoes.
- When your potatoes are cooked remove them from the hot water and add them to an ice bath to stop them from cooking further and to cool them down.
- Once your potatoes are cooked, cooled and chopped you can add a tablespoon of vinegar to the potatoes to bring out the taste before adding the other ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 8 small potatoes – boiled, skinned and chopped
- ¼ red onion finely chopped (let the chopped onion soak in a bowl of cold water before using)
- 3 hard boiled eggs chopped
- fresh herbs finely chopped (to taste)
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup sour cream or plain full cream yoghurt
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Method:
- In a jug mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, red onion, salt, pepper and herbs
- Add the sauce to the potatoes and stir in.
- Add the eggs to the potato salad and stir in.
The beauty of making potato salad for a braai is that it can be made well ahead of time and kept in the fridge until you are ready to serve. This potato salad can be kept in the fridge for up to three days.
You can also change up this recipe each time by adding other ingredients such as chopped celery or pickles.
Creamy Pasta Salad
Pasta salad is another firm favourite when it comes to braai salads.
Tips for making the best pasta salad:
- Choose the right pasta – pasta shells or elbows make the best pasta salads.
- Cook your pasta until just done – you don’t want to make the mistake of overcooking it and coming out with sticky, soggy pasta.
- Cook your pasta with plenty of salt and a tablespoon of oil.
- Once your pasta is just cooked remove it from the pot and rinse it with cold water, this will prevent it from continuing to cook as well as stop it from getting sticky.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups pasta – I prefer the big shells
- ¼ red onion finely chopped (let the chopped onion soak in a bowl of cold water before using)
- 1 red pepper chopped
- 1 cup peas
- 1 cup corn
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup sour cream or plain full cream yoghurt
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Method:
- In a jug mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, red onion, salt and pepper
- Add the pasta and the rest of the ingredients into a bowl with the sauce and mix
This pasta salad is divine and will keep in the fridge for up to three days which means you can make it the day before or early in the day before the braai. You can mix this salad up each time by chopping and changing some of the ingredients – great ingredients to add are cheese blocks, radish or celery.

Cucumber and Avo Salad
This salad has such a fresh taste to it and so easy to make. This salad should be made just before serving.
Ingredients:
- 1 cucumber
- 2 avocadoes
- ½ red onion finely chopped
- ½ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1 clove garlic minced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Method:
- Add the red onion, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, mustard, minced garlic, salt and pepper to a shaker and shake until completely combined
- Slice the cucumber in half length ways then slice it thinly and chop the avos
- Mix the cucumber and avos together in a bowl and pour over about half of the dressing and mix. You can keep the rest of the dressing for another salad.
Broccoli and Almond Salad
This salad is not only tasty, it is a healthy braai salad for those that want to have a great braai but know that they are getting in some healthy choices. This salad can be made ahead of time and but make sure to only add the nuts just before serving to ensure that they stay crunchy.
This salad is crunchy and super delish.
Ingredients:
- one broccoli head cut up small – leave out the stalks and only keep the florets
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
- 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons of mustard
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1 clove of garlic minced
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ¼ cup red onions finely chopped
- ½ cup dried cranberries
For the almonds:
- ½ cup almonds
- ½ cup pumpkin seeds
- ¼ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
Method:
- For the almonds mix the almonds, pumpkin seeds, paprika, maple syrup and soy sauce together then spread onto a baking tray on baking paper and bake at 180ºC until golden brown (about 10 to 15 minutes) and set aside to cool
- Add the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard, honey, garlic and salt to a big bowl and whisk until combined.
- Add the broccoli, onions and cranberries to the dressing and toss until all the ingredients are coated with the dressing.
- Add the almonds mix just before serving.
Mango and Red Pepper Salad
If you have never tried mango in your salad before you don’t know what you are missing so you had better give it a go.
Please excuse the soggy mangoes in my photo above, I really wanted to add this salad to my list because it really is a divine salad, but it is not mango season so the picture above was using tinned mangoes. It really is best to use mangoes that are fresh and firm but feel to make do with tinned mangoes.
Ingredients:
- 1 mango
- 1 pepper
- 1 small red onion
- ¼ cup coriander leaves
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Method:
- Whisk together the balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil, sugar, salt and pepper until combined
- Cut the mango, red pepper and red onion into julienne style pieces
- Add the coriander leaves and dressing to the mango, pepper and onion and toss until coated
Fully Loaded Butternut and Spinach Salad
Nothing beats a green salad but there is no reason to make it boring, there are so many ways to make a salad fun, delicious and interesting. Here’s the fully loaded salad that I love to make but feel free to swap out the ingredients for your favourites and play around. A great fully loaded salad does not limit itself to traditional salad items, you can add fruit, seeds, nuts, grains, legumes, meat and veggies.
Fully loaded salads make great braai salads and are also perfect as a meal all on their own too.
Ingredients for the butter nut:
- 4 cups butternut chopped into smallish cubes
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
Ingredients for the salad and dressing:
- 100g baby spinach
- ½ cup mixed sprouts
- ½ cup of chopped almonds
- ½ cup of pumpkin seeds
- ½ cup of dried cranberries
- ½ cup of feta cut into blocks
- 1 ½ tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 ½ tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 2 teaspoons of mustard
- 1 clove of garlic minced
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
Method:
- For the butternut mix the olive oil, honey and cinnamon together and then toss with the butternut cubes to completely coat the butternut
- Bake the butternut cubes at 180ºC for 25 – 30 minutes until just cooked through. Make sure to turn them a few times. Put aside to cool.
- Roast the almonds and pumpkin seeds for a few minutes in a pan to bring out the flavour and put aside to cool.
- Add the spinach, butternut, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sprouts , cranberries and feta to a bowl.
- In a separate bowl mix the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, mustard, minced garlic, salt and pepper until combined, then drizzle over the salad.

The bacon oepsies are always a huge hit and so much cheaper to make yourself in comparison to buying them! It does take a little practice to get them right so they don’t unroll but well worth it.
Classic Three Bean Salad
• 1 can kidney beans
• 1 can cannellini beans
• 1.5 cups frozen green beans (thawed)
• 1/4 cup chopped parsley
• 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
• 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
• 1/4 cup olive oil
• 2 Tbsp sugar
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/4 tsp freshly cracked pepper
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
•
• Rinse and drain the kidney beans and cannellini beans. Place the kidney beans, cannelini beans and thawed green beans in a bowl.
• Slice the red onion, then soak the onion in a bowl of ice water for about five minutes before draining and finely dicing. Chop the parsley. Add the onion and parsley to the bowl with the beans.
• In a separate bowl, whisk together the vinegar, sugar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and Dijon.
• Pour the dressing over the beans, onion, and parsley, then stir to combine.
• Transfer the bean salad to the refrigerator and let the beans marinate in the dressing for about 30 minutes before serving. Give the salad a good stir just before serving to redistribute the dressing.

Onions
Baked beans
Green chillies
Chillie sauce
Sweet chillie sauce.
Curry powder.
Crushed garlic n ginger.
Cooking oil.
Method.
1.Cut the onions and peppers into dice.
2. Put little oil in a pot, fry the onions and pepper until the onion browns.
3. Add the curry powder,green chillie and ginger and garlic.
3.Then add grated carrots fry until the carrot is soft.
4. Take of from heat then add the baked beans, chillie sauce and sweet chillie.
Then enjoy with your nice braai

Coleslaw: Shred cabbage, carrots, and onions, then toss them together with mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let it sit in the fridge for a while to allow the flavors to blend.

Braaibroodjies: Layer tomato slices, onion rings, cheddar cheese, and chutney between two slices of bread. Butter the outsides of the sandwich, then toast it on the braai until the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy.
Cucumber and Tomato Salad:
– Ingredients:
– 2 cucumbers, diced
– 2 tomatoes, diced
– 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
– 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 tablespoon lemon juice
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, combine the diced cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, and parsley.
2. Drizzle olive oil and lemon juice over the salad.
3. Season with salt and pepper, and gently toss to combine.
4. Let it chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before serving.

The roasted chickpeas are great and not just for a braai, they make a great snack for movie night and I’ve also made them to add to other salads and its so yummy!
OK let’s be honest here we will probably only try about 6 maybe even 5 of these sides. Majority has ingredients we don’t really enjoy like the roasted chickpeas not for us. The spinach and butternut sounds delicious my 2 favorite things.

Method
Chop cauliflower and broccoli then put them in boiling water.Strain water and let the vegs cool down
Slice the robot peppers and chopped onion then fry them in oil.Do not fry them beyond recognition.
In a bowl put everything. Then mix in the diced cheese and cream cheese. And 1000 Island sauce and enjoy !

These are excellent suggestions for braai sides. Thanks for sharing! I love bacon oepsies but have never made it myself. I am going to try your mango and red pepper salad. That is something different and interesting which I’ve never had before. I love a bit of sweetness or tanginess to my salads. When I make potato salad, I add a touch of white vinegar, sugar, and a pinch of medium curry powder to my mayo. It really elevates my potato salad. I do the same with rice salad which is another braai side salad that goes down really well. I would like to share my easy corn braai side recipe with you. We make it all the time. Not just as a braai side, but as an in between snack for the kids, or a quick and easy breakfast side dish.
Easy Sweetcorn Fritters
Ingredients:
1 x Tin sweetcorn kernels
1 1/2 Cup Cake flour
2 x Eggs
1/2 Cup Milk
1 x Cup grated cheddar or gouda cheese
1 x Tablespoon chopped parsley
2 x Tablespoon chopped chives
1 x Teaspoon baking powder
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying
Method:
Sift the dry ingredients together
Mix the flour, eggs, milk, herbs, baking powder, and salt
Add the corn
Drop spoonfuls of the mixture to heated oil in a frying pan
Cook until golden brown and puffy
Remove from oil and place on kitchen towels to cool
I don’t always add the herbs and sometimes I cut bacon into tiny pieces and add it to the mix. You can adapt the recipe and add whichever ingredients you have on hand.
Sweetcorn fritters are lovely! Thank you for your recipe, I will most definitely give that a go soon. Corn is something our whole family love so I love including corn in our meals. And thanks for the potato salad tips. I read somewhere that adding some apple cider vinegar to your potatoes before you add the sauce really makes a huge difference but I have not tried that out yet myself.
I have a different take an a braai broodjie.
I take hamburger buns and make a hole in the side and take some of the inside out. I then mic butter garlic greenpepper tomato and spice and some cheese
i then put it a nice heap in the hollowed out bun and close the bun in tin foil. Then put in on the braai until crispy
Oh my word that sounds delish and so much fun too, my kids will love that!

I love preparing a delicious easy straight forward potato salad and baked beans with chopped green pepper, onion, chilli or two and mayonnaise. These can both be served cold for convenience. It tastes delicious together on a roll with your sausage. Now I am hungry.

This is a great list of salads – the broccoli and almond braai salad looks amazing! I know it sounds boring but we always love to have a greek salad with our braai. Another favourite in our home is coleslaw.
We also love to make a carrot and raisin salad for our braais, here’s the recipe that I use:
3 cups grated carrot, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup peanuts, 1/4 cup chopped coriander, 2 onions sliced thinly – toss these ingredients together in a bowl. In another bowl make the dressing: 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 tablespoon honey, juice and zest from one lemon, 2 minced garlic cloves, 2 tablespoons fresh minced ginger, 1 teaspoon cumin, pinch salt and pepper – whisk all of these ingredients together then mix into the salad.

My fav recipe is for “Braai broodjies”…1 Finely chopped onion, 2T garlic, 2T finely diced jalapeños, 1Cup cheese and 1.5c mayo… Mix all together and put on bread 10 minute before going on the coales… (makes bread soggy)… Perfectly garlicky with every “braai”…
My husband goes wild for braai broodjies, but he makes them very plain, just bread with cheese, tomato and onion inside. He also loves chillies so I must try this recipe for him!

My side recipe is feta stuffed Mushrooms.
Stuff mushrooms of your choice with feta cubes, thyme/rosemary, black pepper & a pinch of salt. Drizzle with olive oil and grill it on your braai until mushrooms are slightly golden in colour.

Banana salad is by far my favorite… super simple and always a hit. Just slice up some bananas. Take condense milk and mayonnaise(I love it with nola but its a personal preference) and mix it together. Quantities don’t matter as its all down to personal taste. If you prefer it more sweet add more condense milk or more tangy add more mayonnaise. Add some hot curry powder and mix in… Just rememebr the longer this salad sits the hotter it gets…. mix everything together and thats that. Flippen delicious especially if you have a lamb chop with it.
Oooh that reminds me of what my mom always used to make! Banana curry salad. She sliced bananas and added mayo and curry powder, it was divine. I’ve never tried it with condensed milk though, I must give it a go!

It is hard when there is so much to do in the day, by the time supper time comes I’m done in. That said I do love experimenting with new food, its just finding the time and energy to do it.
Corn on the Cob: Brush fresh corn with melted butter, season with salt, pepper, and paprika, then grill until lightly charred. Serve it with a squeeze of lemon juice for extra tang.

3 Bean Salad is also delicious
2-3 Tbsp olive oil
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 tsp dried oregano
3/4-1 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp black pepper (optional)
1 tsp maple syrup
1 (15 oz.) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15 oz.) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15 oz.) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
4 stalks celery, diced (4 stalks yield ~1 cup or 120 g)
1/2 medium red onion, diced (1/2 medium onion yields ~3/4 cup or 72g)
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
This bean and chickpea salad looks fantastic, I really need to start incorporating more beans into our meals!
Chakalaka pasta salad
Ingredients
60ml oil
1 onion chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
1 each rainbow peppers, chopped
2 tomatoes, grated
1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp ROYCO® Chakalaka Regular Packet Soup
2 cans chakalaka (hot)
500g cooked pasta

Heat oil in a pot and fry onion for 3 minutes

I love to make chakalaka braai bread or bread rolls. I make my own chakalaka mix with robot peppers, onions, garlic, chilli powder, curry, vinegar, apricot jam and Himalayan salt. instead of cheddar cheese I use feta…can also add traditional sliced tomatoes.

Stuffed grilled peppers:
Cut 3 large bell peppers in half (lengthwise) and remove the seeds and membranes.
For the filling, fry half a cup of sliced mushrooms, half a cup of diced baby marrows, a quarter cup of chopped red onion, 1 clove of garlic (chopped), 1 cup of chopped fresh spinach, half a cup of cooked lentils and 1 cup of chopped cherry tomatoes in olive oil. Add 1 cup of pre-cooked quinoa to the mixture and season with salt and pepper.
Stuff the bell pepper halves with the quinoa and veggie mixture. Top with grated cheese (optional).
Bake the stuffed bell peppers in the oven until the peppers are softened.

I always make 4 raw tomatoes , 1 cup of atchar, whole cucumber and tin of baked beans. It will be a pleasure to get braai hamper festive is here. It is goner be nice to share braai with friends and family!
Tomato sauce pasta salad – one pack pasta screws, 1 cup tomato sauce, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup oil and red wine vinegar (mixed equally), 2 teaspoons curry powder, 1 tablespoon crushed garlic, 1 large onion, 1 large green pepper. Mix the tomato sauce, sugar, oil, red wine vinegar, curry power and garlic together. Chop the onion and pepper and add to sauce. Mix in the cooked pasta and let it stand for 6 hours before serving.
This is a lovely recipe, my mother in law recently brought one over and it was very similar, she gave me the recipe and it is basically the same, just without the garlic. I used yellow peppers when I made it.

Broccoli Salad
8 slices crispy bacon
2 heads broccoli (or swop 1 cauliflower)
2 cup grated mature cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups feta cheese crumbled
1 large red onion
2 tbsp black pepper
250-500ml creamy mayonnaise (per taste)
1 Sliced red and yellow peppers (each)
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Refrigerate until needed. Can be made a day ahead.
Watch that bowl empty in seconds

COUSCOUS SALAD
half a cup of couscous as per instuctions on box
1 garlic sliced
3 Spring onions, sliced
400g baby tomatoes cut in half
a handful of mint leaves
a handful of parsley leaves
3 Tbs olive oil
Method: mix juice of 2 lemons and grated peel with your olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.
Mix couscous with the ingredients
Pour your lemon juice and olive oil and mix lightly
1 packet rainbow coleslaw
2 blocks of feta cheese (plain)
Forage and Feast orange vinagarette
Mix your feta cheese into your coleslaw and drizzle with the vinegarette, the taste is absolutely amazing and it is a cheap salad that goes very far and feeds alot.

garlic mashed potatoes with crispy fried bacon
4 boiled potatoes
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 sprigs thyme
1 tablespoon mayonaise or more depends how you like it
1 small green chilli finely chopped(optional)
4 strips crispy fried bacon
fry 4 strips of bacon in very little oil (remove)
in the same pan add 4 peeled potatoes
2 springs of thyme leaves
I teaspoon salt and bring to a boil
once potatoes are cooked mash until soft and smooth
move to a bowl add black pepper & chilli mix well
add bacon & mayonaise mix until fluffy and creamy
Oh yum, this sounds amazing, its got all of my favourite things in it!
One of my family favourites is broccoli & cheese salad
I usually use a packet of frozen Broccoli florets (depending on the amount of people +/-100g pp)
1 packed of diced bacon
1 cup of grater cheddar cheese
Mayonnaise
Boil the broccoli until almost soft (try not to over cook it otherwise it goes mooshy)
Fry up your bacon until crispy
Set broccoli & bacon aside to cool.
Once they are cool mix the broccoli, bacon & cheese together adding in your mayo. Once everything is mixed through just taste before adding salt as the bacon can be quite salty.
Refrigerate again or keep at room temperature & serve when your meat is ready.
That sounds great Lizelle, I’m going to give it a go. Unfortunately my kids are not fond of broccoli at all, I’ve been trying different recipes to try getting them to eat it. This has cheese and bacon so maybe this is the one.
I always make potato salad
Boil potatoes with peel on when it’s done let it cool and gently remove the skin and cut into cubes ; add butter or rama which is what I prefer add freshly cracked black pepper; garlic powder salt to taste and lovely cross and Blackwell moyonaise mix it together and add fresh chives and spring onion for garnish… Put it in the fridge and let it get nice and cool before serving ????????????????????????????
Yummy, I’ve never put garlic powder in potato salad before, I have to try that! Another lovely addition to potato salad is finely chopped parsley 🙂

I love salads with beetroot but unfortunately my kids and hubby detest beetroot so I can only make things with beetroot when we have guests lol.
for the Classic Three Bean Salad, the reason for soaking the onions in cold water is to reduce the pungency, to soften the flavour & this process makes the onion crisp. Don’t soak too long though, 5 to 10 minutes is sufficient.

3 Bean curry salad
CARROT SALAD
INGREDIENTS
1 kg carrots cut into circles
375 ml water
2 green peppers, sliced
2 onions, chopped or sliced
1 pkt cream of tomato soup powder
250 ml white sugar
200 ml white vinegar
125 ml oil
10 ml worcester sauce
5 ml mustard powder
2 ml salt
2 ml pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
Cook or steam carrots in 125 ml water until tender.
Once carrots are done make layers in a bowl starting with the carrots then green pepper and onion ending with a layer of carrots.
Place the remaining ingredients in a pot and and mix well over low heat until thickened.
Pour hot sauce over the vegetables and shake the dish gently to get the sauce in between the layers.
Let cool and cover the dish and let marinade in the fridge for 2 days before serving.
I like a green monster salad. blanche stem broccoli, fine green beans, asparagus, mange tout. add cooled blanched veg to a bowl with rocket leaves and diced avo and feta. mix up a dressing of mustard, honey, olive oil & lemon juice. pour over dressing, sprinkle with salt flakes and cranberries and toasted almond flakes. yum yum yum!

Biltong salad is always a winner. Layer lettuce, yellow pepper, cherry tomato, cucumber and celery in a bowl. Then add avocado, biltong and feta. Sprinkle sunflower seeds and cranberries on top.
Chakalaka, mixed with my wife’s gravy,Pap & Vleis. I’m doing the meat, she decides what’s best with it, but I think this would be a great combination.
Potato Salad With A Twist:
5 x potatoes (peeled and cubed)
1 x packet bits of bacon
1 x onion
1 x teaspoon time
2 x boiled eggs (optional)
Nola extra cream mayonnaise
Teaspoon of oil
Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions:
Cook your potatoes until soft.
Fry the onions in the oil until just going soft, add your bacon and fry until bacon is cooked.
If you are including eggs, boil until yolk is hard.
Into a bowl Add the potatoes, onion and bacon mixture, eggs, time, and your prefer amount of Nola mayonnaise. Mix until well combine. Garnish with a bit of parsley and enjoy!

Potato salad and chakalaka
I Love making my sweet, sour, spicy baked beans salad my favourite. Use a tin of baked beans in tomato sauce. Chop half an onion and half either green, red or yellow pepper. Chop some fresh coriander and chillie then add all these to the baked beans and stir through. Add a dash of brown vinegar some sugar to take away the sour taste and some crushed black peppercorns.
I agree that the salad and sides are just as important to accompany braai. Thanks for the great tips to make the perfect potato salad, I also Love adding boiled egg, chopped onion, peppers & fresh chillies with dried mixed herbs it makes all the difference. Creamy pasta salad is a must try. Cucumber and Avo salad looks interesting. I love the taste of a fresh Broccoli salad so healthy. Wow the Mango and Red Pepper Salad combination looks lovely. Fully Loaded Butternut and Spinach Salad seems to be filling and yummy. Pull Apart Bread Side easy to make thanks for sharing. Mushroom Braai Kebabs is such a great idea. Roasted Chickpeas is definitely a healthier snack. Bacon Oepsies are a popular braai side.
I am sharing one of my favorite curry noodle salad.
Ingredients:
• 1 Packet noodles ( screws)
• 1 green pepper, diced
• 1 onion, diced
• 3 tsp hot curry powder (can do a mixture of masalas also)
• 7 ml salt
• 250ml tomato sauce
• 125ml oil
• 125ml vinegar
• 250ml sugar
Cook noodles until soft but still firm don’t want it mushy. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry onion and green pepper until onions are transparent then add the salt and pepper and fry for a bit. Add the curry powder and cook through and also add tomato sauce cook through. Add sugar, vinegar and oil. Cook through now let mixture cool a little first then pour over noodles and mix. Serve hot or cold.
Yummy! My mother in law recently brought a very similar pasta salad for us one night and it was divine. I got the recipe for her and it was such a hit.
Not the traditional Coleslaw Salad
Use a combination of red and green medium size cabbage for this coleslaw. Take off the outer leaves of the cabbage then cut into quarters, and then cut out the core. Slice the cabbage quarters into very thin shreds. Peel 3 medium carrots and grate. Coarsley chop fresh parsley will need about half a cup. Mix the dressing together first, Mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Add the dressing to the cabbage and carrot mixture and stir through. You have the option to add 1-2 teaspoons sugar or honey but I prefer not to as carrots give the sweet taste.
I Love making my own garlic butter to fill French loaf to make my cheesy garlic braai bread. You will need 1 French bread loaf, 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature, 1/4 cup parsley finely chopped, 2 1/2 tbsp garlic minced, 1/3 cup parmesan grated, 1 tsp Aromat or to taste, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp dried oregano or mixed herbs. I cut the French loaf in slots on top but not all the way through. In a small bowl, mix butter with parsley, garlic, parmesan cheese, aromat, black pepper, and oregano or mixed herbs.Spread the butter mixture generously in each slit. Then wrap in foil. This usually goes on the braai very last as it’s best served warm off the coals and butter melted. It’s always a winner when I make it and there is never leftovers.

We love corn on the cob with chili and herbs! It’s really easy to make, just drizzle the corn with some olive oil before putting it on the braai, then when it comes off the braai and is still hot smear a mixture of butter, chipped chili, parsley, salt and pepper on. Yummy!
That sounds great Riana, we always eat our corn with salt and butter, it never occurred to me to add anything special to the butter. I’ll skip the chili, but my hubby loves chili so I’m sure he will love it.
Banana bean salad is a really quick and cheap side to make for a braai. Mix one tin of baked beans. 2 bananas and a tablespoon of mayonnaise. It’s also a great way to get kids to eat the beans!
