Amazing Benefits Of Aromatherapy For Kids

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils derived from the bark, flowers, stems, leaves, roots and/ or any other part of a plant to enhance physical and psychological well-being.

Aromatherapy has many well-known benefits for adults, as well as for children. This alternative therapy is often used in conjunction with other remedies or as a solution all on its own.

As a mother I prefer to treat any problems my children have using natural remedies before I try any other forms of medication or harsher treatment. Aromatherapy is something that I have made regular use of for my own children, for myself and many other ways in my home.

It is important to take note of the following when using aromatherapy for kids:

  • never give essential oils orally to your child
  • always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil
  • sensitivity to essential oils in children is rare, but possible so introduce one oil at a time to check for sensitivity by adding one drop of essential oils to four drops of carrier oil and apply this to a small area of your child’s skin and monitor it for 24 hours before consideirng it safe to use
  • avoid using essential oils around your child’s face, especially the eyes and nose
  • if you are adding essential oils to your child’s bath then dilute it first in a water-soluble carrier such as raw unfiltered honey or vegetable glycerine
  • always use pure essential oils

There has been a lot of debate about the age that you can start using essential oils on children and babies – there have been some suggestions that you can start using it on babies from 4 months old, personally I went on the safe side and only started using essential oils on my kids from two years old.

Keep in mind that essential oils are potent, so always follow the above guidelines and check with your own doctor before going ahead with essential oils with your kids.

Amazing Benefits Of Aromatherapy For Kids

Calming Effect and Reduces Anxiety

There are many children that suffer from anxiety, including my own 6 year old daughter. The best remedy I have found to date is to give her a daily massage with essential oils. Massage in itself is a great remedy for anxiety but adding essential oils that are calming and relieve anxiety make it even more effective.

Some essential oils that have a calming effect and are good for reducing anxiety are:

  • Lavender
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Cedarwood
  • Vetiver
  • Mandarin Orange
  • Frankincense

Insomnia Relief

Having a child that suffers from insomnia is no fun for anyone, especially your child and yourself. I suffer from insomnia and as a child I had night terrors, now it has turned a full circle and my daughter struggles with insomnia and night terrors.

Sleep is so terribly important for your child and her development, plus it is vitally important that you as a parent get enough good sleep so that you are able to cope and look after your family.

Massage also helps to promote good sleep and adding in certain essential oils can make this more effective. Here are some essential oils that promote good sleep:

  • Lavender
  • Chamomile
  • Clary Sage
  • Cedarwood
  • Sweet orange

Increase Alertness, Focus and Concentration

When it comes to sitting still and doing what is required of them like, listening, doing homework or studying for an exam, children can find it incredibly hard to focus and concentrate.

I am just getting to understand this now, with my daughter just starting Grade 1 and doing homework for the first time. She wiggles around like their are ants in her pants and she can’t seem to look me straight in the face either. So I have been investigating essential oils that will help her to sit still and focus on the task at hand.

It may not be viable to massage your child ahead of each study or homework session, so you can consider using them in a diffuser or room spray just before your child has to sit down to the task at hand.

Here are some essential oils that will increase your child’s alertness, focus and concentration:

  • Wild Orange
  • Lemon
  • Peppermint
  • Cedarwood
  • Basil
  • Grapefruit
  • Rosemary

Reduce Temper Tantrums

There are loads of reasons why your child may be having temper tantrums ranging from being overtired, feeling unheard and of course just being two years old or even better a threenager!

Making use of essential oils that are calming for your child and that reduce anxiety will help to keep your child balanced and relaxed. In the same way if your child suffers from insomnia and you tackle that issue your child will most likely have less temper tantrums.

However chances are your child will still be throwing tantrums on occasion. Teaching your child how to express himself and how to handle his feelings will help to reduce tantrums however while your child is in the middle of throwing a massive tantrum all those discussions may go right out the window.

It is especially hard when your kid is having a melt down of night in the middle of the shop when you are in a rush! Sound familiar?

Spend some regularly with your child doing things with essential oils that are calming and make your child happy. Maybe you bath together, or you give your child a massage, or even reading your child his favorite story while diffusing calming essential oils.

Whenever you go out take a tissue with some of the same essential oils on. Keep it in a plastic packet in your bag, close on hand. When your child flips out in public talk calming and soothingly to your child and whip out the tissue with the oils.  Your child will associate the smells with happy and calm memories with you.

Use any of the essential oils for calming and reducing anxiety:

  • Lavender
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Cedarwood
  • Vetiver
  • Mandarin Orange
  • Frankincense

Thrush is a common problem for children when they go on a course of antibiotics. It is so important for your child to also take a course of probiotics when taking any antibiotics.

If your child has vaginal thrush it can be so unpleasant. Diaper rash is also very unpleasant and very common with babies.

For both of these ailments you can add a few drops of Tea Tree oil to your child’s bath water. You can also clean the affected area with water that has a drop of Tea Tree oil in it.

Soothe Stomach Aches

Massaging your child’s stomach with certain essential oils can relieve bloating, stomach aches and pains.

Getting lice is a common childhood ailment – chances are high that one day your child will get lice from another child at school. Lice is an awful problem to have – it will cause your child discomfort plus you will  need to keep your child home from school until you have managed to get rid of the lice infestation. You will also need to wash all the bedding, clothing and hair brushes that your child and the rest of your family has come into contact with to ensure that the infestation does not spread.

Prevention is way better than cure in this case! Add a drop of Tea Tree oil to your child’s shampoo every time you wash your child’s hair to keep lice away. As an alternative you can also add a few drops of Tea Tree oil to water in a spray bottle and spray it on your child’s hair regularly.

Tea Tree oil acts as a hair detangler so if you are struggling with knots in your child’s hair this will be taken care of at the same time, which is an added bonus.

Baby Gummy Smile

Soothe Teething Pain

When your baby is teething chances are high your baby will be niggly and uncomfortable. There are many teething products on the market but considering that the teething process can take up to about 3 years, going for natural teething remedies is always preferred.

Your baby can start teething anywhere from about 3 months old and should have all twenty teeth by about age three.

The best essential oils for teething pain are Chamomile and Lavender, this is due to the fact that they are both soothing and non-toxic. Add 1 part essential oils to 200 parts carrier oil – massage this onto your baby’s jaw line to soothe teething pain. Never put it inside your baby’s mouth!

  1. Very cool article – learn something new every day. Just two things I wanted to add. First, you can add the calming oils (Or whichever oils you need) to playdough and carry that around in a little tub instead of a tissue. That way your child gets the benefit of the oils and has something to do with his/her little hands at the same time.
Second, I have read at least twice recently that Tea Tree is toxic for dogs. So, it’s not a plan to run a diffuser with Tea Tree around your dogs or to put it on their skin. So, as always, it pays to check into these things carefully before using them so that you can get the maximum benefit with the minimum harm.

    • Quite a few essential oils is toxic to cats as well. Also pregnant woman must be very careful around essential oils as some can lower your blood pressure to dangerous levels for baby without your knowledge.

  2. My eldest child is in Grade 10 and she is highly stressed out. I will definitely be trying out the essential oils recommended for insomnia especially as she constantly has a broken sleep. She doesn’t know how to let go of her work to just relax.

I just asked my pharmacist friend yesterday about some natural remedy to help her. This article came at the right time for me. Thank you

    • Hi Saaleha

Have a look for the Pegasus range, it’s available at many pharmacies as well as at Dis-Chem. I’d recommend using the Calming 30c and/or Sleep 30c for your daughter.

  3. Thank I think this was heaven sent especially with the temper tantrum going to get some oils tomorrow and try it @lisabennett I will try with play dough I also read it’s nice to plant these citronella lavender lemongrass and basil for mozzies at your entrance and just brush your hand over as you walk past your hand smells nice and no more mozzies

  4. The paragraph relating to increasing a childs focus amd concentration levels is the one in particular that relates to my little one. He is hyper active and this was really informative for me.

  5. In our home, we absolutely love citronella oil! However, at first, a smell to get used to, it works wonders.

Our home is located close to a river and the mountains. This means that we are living in mosquito heaven! I mix citronella oil with aqueous cream and then after a bath, rub it to my little one’s whole body. This is kind of like a 2-in-1 as you moisturize the skin and repel the mosquitos at the same time.

This post needs to go on my fridge door for sure!

  6. Thanks for sharing. This article is very informative.

I had no idea that there are so many uses for some of these oils especially lavender and chamomile. I have been a bit apprehensive in the past to make use of them simply due to my lack of knowledge.

I will definitely keep this article as reference for future use because I do love natural or home remedies.

We’ve had such a problem with those little sand fleas a while ago because I have a small dog sleeping indoors. We’ve used karba dust outside which worked really fast. But my problem was inside.

Unfortunately JD was the one that got bitten the most. There must have been one or two in his cot. It didn’t help that I washed his bedding. He still had bite marks.

Eventually I threw baby powder in the cot and rubbed it into the bedding.

Thank goodness, this helped to get rid of them for good.

I have some tea tree oil in my bathroom. I know that there are so many uses for this oil for cleaning as well as healing.

I’ve used a drop or two ofpeppermint oil underneath JD’s pillow a few times in the past. This is a great remedy for blocked noses.

There are so many great herbs and oils for natural remedies. I just wish I had more knowledge and time to really look into this.

I’ve always had great respect for people that have a vast knowledge of this and have been implementing it to help others and for general use at home.

  7. Many store brands actually dilute their EOs with alcohol or other oils and then you don’t get the full benefit of the EOs, irrespective of how you use it. You’ll also find they don’t last very long.
I didn’t know this until recently when I starting learning more about EOs and it actually saddens me. I really wish companies were a little more transparent about things they stock.

Also, thank you for mentioning to dilute the oils in a carrier oil if you’re actually applying oil to the skin! Citrus oils can actually cause burns if you apply it straight onto the skin and go into the sun

  8. A great article, however, dilution rates differ between babies, toddles, children and adults.

  9. Adri la Grange

I really love essential oils. We have a whole cupboard full of them, but we always make sure that it is not within my girls’ reach.

I like to put a few drops of essential oils in the water I use to mop the floors. It makes our home smell nice, but the main reason for doing this is to repel spiders from our house.

I usually use peppermint essence, because I like the smell, especially in the kitchen. Of course you can also use citronella, cinnamon, rose, tea tree, eucalyptus etc. Eucalyptus works well for the days I have a blocked nose or a headache.

  10. This is a great article. Always try and keep it natural, I say, especially in the times we are living with so much toxicity everywhere and in everything. It can be difficult to find a product that is just natural and in its purest form, though. I have managed to find a company who does this and have been on their products for a while now. And now I have now also ordered some essential oils. Cannot wait to try them and see if it works. This article will be a good basis to refer back to every time I do.

I wish we knew about the natural way of doing things earlier and did not have to go through the use and side-effects of all the chemicals that can be so bad for you before we realized there is a better solution.

Thank goodness for blogs and moms who share!

  11. I really love essential oils it really helps me but it’s out of reach from the kids. I literally mop my floors with it smells good helps me sleep also
