Potty training your child is an important milestone, your child gains independence and your nappy changing days are coming to a close. Not having to pay the huge expense of nappies is also something to look forward to.
Potty training can start any time from 3 months old to 3 years old. The process can be relatively quick or it can be done slowly over a period of a year or more.
Here are some potty training tips:
- Let your child watch you on the toilet and explain what you are doing.
- Leave a potty in the bathroom and encourage your child to sit on it (with or without pants on) when you go to the toilet.
- Praise your child for every little achievement on the potty.
- Give your child a reward (for eg a sweet or a sticker) for every achievement.
- Make a big thing of letting your child choose his/ her own underwear at the shop
- Stay patient, understanding and supportive of your child, especially when there are accidents. You an also buy your child a book about potty training.
- Take your child to the toilet or potty regularly throughout the day especially straight after meals when they are more likely to need the toilet.
- Plan any trips out with potty training in mind. Take your child to the toilet before leaving the house and immediately on arrival at the destination. When leaving the destination take your child to the toilet again. Always carry a few sets of spare clothes when out!
- Get your child a nice book about learning to use the potty that you can read to him or her.
Keep in mind that while there are a few differences potty training girls vs boys the basic process is the same.
Have you got any additional tips for parents that are potty training?
Wish me Luck as from the 1st March I will be starting the potty training process on the 1st of March.. eeeeekkkk
Good luck Sammy! Should maybe have put in the tips to do it in summer? Heehee easier for them to run around bare bum when it is warm. If you struggle with anything read the previous blogs on potty training.
Makes me anxious – I know it’s different with every child. Will definitely use these tips when it’s my turn to potty train and hope that my princess is ‘good’
Noori I am sure they are all “good” little kaboutjies. Just some of the kids get scared of the toilet, or they are scared of not having a nappy because it is what they are used to. I am lucky, my 3 yr old girl takes great pride in pooping on the toilet! But a little boy the same age refuses to even try and has not even had a wee on a potty or toilet! They are all just different 🙂
Wish me luck!!! I’m on potty training with my baby girl. And let me tell you it is a hassle. My first born trained herself but this little one is full of stories!!!
Good luck Tanya, I hope you find these potty training tips helpful!
Do you have any tips for pottytraining boys? I am clueless
Hi Nathazia
Well boys are just the same as girls. I have a son that is busy with potty training now and I have a daughter that is 4 years old. I make my son sit when weeing because it is much easier. I guess things will get interesting (and messy) when it comes to him standing to wee LOL. However that is when my husband can take over since it is a guy thing 🙂
