6 Blogging Tips Newbie Mommy Bloggers Need To Know To Succeed

Blogging tips newbies need to know would have to come in handy for me 7 years ago.

When I started blogging this website, which was originally an online store, I knew nothing about blogging. I was trying to find ways to get traffic to my website and I read that blogging was a good way.

For 2 years I published some blog posts without having a clear idea of what I should be doing. I was shooting in the dark.

I was working online for 3 years before I realized the true potential of blogging and then I went at it with everything I had. I quickly learned that I don’t even need my own store to make money online. In fact it was cheaper, less work and more fun to blog to make money online.

I have now been blogging full time for more than 3 years. There are plenty of things I wish I had known before I started working online for the first time.

Blogging Tips Newbie Bloggers

Do It Yourself

And yes I mean everything. Build your own WordPress website from scratch and have it self-hosted.

If you are serious about blogging my opinion is not to go with Wix, Weebly or any other free website service.

And don’t pay thousands to a web developer to create the most beautiful custom built website for you.

You simply don’t need it. There are plenty of beautiful themes available for free that you can use. You may be told that you should have your website completely unique and custom built. Well I had that and it did nothing for me.

The important thing on your website is the content that you create. If you create content that is useful to your readers and engaging that is really all you need. It does not have to be fancy.

You also need to know how to work your own website. If you build it yourself you will learn everything there is to know about your own website.

It is really not that hard to learn. I am not a techie person yet I have learned how to build my own websites.

In simplified terms you need to do the following:

  • choose a niche (what is your website about)
  • buy a domain name
  • set up your website hosting
  • set up your website on WordPress
  • choose your theme (how it will look – and you can change this at any time)
  • make sure your settings are correct and tweak a few things
  • add some plugins (plugins are sort of like apps – they add functionality to your website)

And there you go – you can start publishing blog posts.

This might sound complicated but having over the shoulder training will help you to set it all up in a jiffy – and yes my first course [FREE] that will be live soon will show you exactly how to do all of the above!

Make sure to visit my website lynnehuysamen.com and sign up for my newsletter to stay informed about my courses.

Learn Some Basic SEO and Content Marketing Skills

Search Engine Optimzation (SEO) might sound scary and complicated but it is actually very simple. SEO involves the things you do on your website (on-page SEO) and off your website (off-page SEO) that helps search engines find and rank your blog posts. This in turn means that when your target audience types certain search terms that you have targeted into search engines they will find you.

There are many things that go into ranking your website and getting organic traffic (traffic from search engines) but it is not hard to learn and very soon you will be pumping out high ranking content.

Some things that you will need to learn are:

  • how to add and verify your website on Google Analytics (this is where you see all the information relating to your Google traffic)
  • how to add and verify your website on Google Search Console, Yahoo and Bing
  • how to submit your website sitemap to search engines
  • how to do keyword research and what to do with your keywords
  • how to optimize your content for search engines
  • how to create images and optimize them for search engines
  • how to make your website mobile friendly
  • how to optimize your website for speed

Yes this all sounds terribly technical but it really isn’t.

My courses will be covering all of this information in very easy to follow videos.

I will add the links as soon as the courses are live.

SEO factors

Publish Content Regularly

Once all of those technical things are out of the way you can get on with blogging. This involves creating and publishing content on a regular basis.

Blogging tips newbies often hear is to publish as much content as possible, but this is not really the case.

You don’t need to publish new content every single day, but figure out a schedule that works well for you and publish content on a consistent basis. If you can only publish once a week that is fine. Make a goal to create and publish a post every week at the same time so that you have a good routine that is manageable.

Focus on creating high quality articles that are engaging rather than publishing lots of content often.

Make sure to allow some time for promoting your blogs on social media too since this will be a great way to get some free traffic before your website starts getting organic traffic. Sharing on social media is part of off-page SEO so it can ultimately help your website ranking.

Be Unique, Be Real, Be YOU

There are thousands of bloggers out there. So don’t try to be like them – you will just get lost in the void. Find your own voice and your own style of blogging. This is what will set you apart from the rest.

Humans have this intense need to be liked and accepted. No matter what you do some people will like you and some people won’t. Make sure that the people that do like you like the real you. Wouldn’t it be sad to try and be something you are not and be liked for that rather than you?

When you are authentic and true to yourself your passion will shine through in your blog and you will reach the perfect audience that is matched to you. When you speak to this audience they will trust you and your blog will grow with followers and engagement.

Don’t be a sheep, following the flock. Be the black sheep and stand out. It is your time to shine.

Email Marketing

Build An Email List

This was one of my biggest mistakes and if I could start over from the beginning one of the first things I would do is start building my list.

You may have heard all the phrases such as the money is in the list? Well it truly is.

Think about this – every time a visitor comes to your website they may never ever return. But if that person signs up for your newsletter you can bring them back to your website over and over for many years to come. You can send them offers, coupons and competitions.

So get your newsletter system set up and start collecting subscribers as soon as you can. From the very first visitor to your website you want them to able to subscribe.

Get Social

Get Social

Setting up social media channels for your blog is so important. This will give you a way to share your content without sharing it to your personal profiles (unless you want to too) while at the same time building online authority for your blog.

As already mentioned sharing your content socially will bring in your first readers to your blog for free and at the same time it is performing off-page SEO which will benefit your website.
